Pope Meets Successor of Lefebvre in Search of Communion

Benedict XVI received Bishop Bernard Fellay, who succeeded Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre as head of the Society of St. Pius X, with the ‘desire to arrive at perfect communion.’ (Continued…) catholic.org/cathcom/international_story.php?id=16341

Should the Pope allow priests to do the Tridentine Mass without permission from the local Bishop? Should he recant the excommunications? Why?

Very good questions. Unfortunately, I don’t feel qualified to answer them, especially the first question. What is the reason that priests need permission to celebrate the Tridentine Mass? I would need to understand that before I could say whether that should be changed or not.

As for lifting the excommunication, the rules seem pretty clear on this. If an excommunicated person admits their sin, and seeks reconciliation through the sacrament of reconciliation, then the excommunication can be lifted.

I think that if a parish wants to say the Tridentine Mass if there is a demand for it. I live in Oregon and we have four or five Churches that all say mass in English and spanish, but not in Latin. I know a lot of people who would go the the SSPX church if it were in communion with Rome. I say that the people should be able to worship God in any language. The Tridentine Mass sounds so beautiful, and it isn’t heretical. I pray that the Pope and the SSPX church patch things up, after all, we could use some more conservative priests preaching to the lay people, so many Catholics are not living the way they should and part of it is because the priests are too afraid to speak the absolute and complete truth. I know the SSPX priests do not fear the world or any group of anti-catholics.
