I wasn’t sure where to put this question…Someone claimed that Pope St. Pius X was an alcoholic, and I was wondering if this was true. I haven’t seen a source for it yet, and this person only said to read “the dark history of the popes” which seemed likely to be biased. I mean, if he did, so what? A person’s past is a person’s past, and we don’t hold it against him as long as he’s fighting it. Anyway, does anyone know if that accusation is true to any degree? Thanks.
 
Popes are infallible on matters of faith and morals. They are not impeccable. There have been many popes who were scoundrels.

Not saying Pius X was any of the above. Just saying that there is no reason to be surprised that popes, after all very human like the rest of us, are imperfect sinners.

Oh, I know that, and I made that point to this person. He/she was just so hateful, and their only response to “provide the source” was the book I mentioned…along with “it’s everywhere, just look it up on the web.” I ran a couple searches but wasn’t finding anything. This person made it sound like the Pope was a regular…the language he/she was using was pretty strong…I don’t want to repeat it.

If he had a problem, like I said, so what? Everyone has a struggle they’ll deal with, I was just wondering if there was *any *truth to his/her accusation.

Ask him (or her) to provide sources. A quick Google didn’t turn anything up on the topic.

A good book to help fight such inaccuracies might be CAL apologist Patrick Madrid’s book, Pope Fiction.
 
Well, he hasn’t provided a source, but someone else came on the attack, saying he got it from a book, and that we Catholics are stupid for believing the Pope can never sin (even though I, among others, pointed out that we don’t believe they can’t sin. I clarified that we just asked for a source.

I’ve withdrawn from the debate, asking for an email when he comes up with the source…please say a prayer for me that I don’t get sucked in again…it’s hard not to…

Wrong thread maybe? :confused:

Pope Pius X can be criticized for many things he did, however, alcoholism is definitely not one of them.
