VATICAN CITY – Pope John Paul II told visiting American bishops that U.S. church institutions – universities, schools and hospitals – must be “genuinely Catholic” and conform to official teaching on “respect for human life, marriage and family and the right ordering of public life.”

John Paul told bishops from Oregon, Washington and Alaska that it was of “utmost importance” that Catholic institutions remain “Catholic in their self-understanding and Catholic in their identity.”

He said all those working at such institutions, including non-Catholics, “should show a sincere and respectful appreciation of that mission.”

i don’t see anything that should be of surprise to anyone… i do love consistency… if JPII is anything he is consistent regardless of political correctness… hmmm… kinda like the Catholic Church… 👍

Yes, the Holy Father is very consistent.

Note his emphasis of what he told them. Get your own houses in order.

This is key to give them an “accepted” voice in society again. We, the church, must be interiorly consistant with Church teachings.

I believe that he understands that the church is this nation is hurting and is trying both publicly and privately (using the resources he has, the bishops, the curia, his writings, etc.) to get the church in the United States back on track.

Unfortunately, the majority of our Catholic intitutions of higher education have choosen to follow the P.C. route and to forsake their Catholic roots.

and some bishops have stripped their “Catholic” status because of it.
