Ah, in that case, the disc is a acoustic device meant to assist in projecting sound out into the crowd without the need for massive (or massive amounts of) speakers.

Its true that not everything written by the saints is perfectly orthodox. Even Aquinas has has some issues, a minor one being that Mary was cleansed sin in the womb, a rather major one being that a fetus to be endowed with a soul only after the ā€œquickeningā€ or first kick, instead of the very moment of conception (though abortion before this time was still evil if done to conceal sinful intercourse). So it is true that one still needs care reading a saints works because beatification:

Iā€™m sitting here actually watching the beatification liturgy, now that I can actually see the whole thing in real feed, it doesnā€™t look as bad as the computer generated graphic. The disc is annoying and I wish that it would go away, though I understand, from other reports, that funding was an issue. It probably explains why they used the least expensive means to handle the acoustics.

However, that being said, there is a simple elegance to the furnishings. There are some very pretty details to the altar and the chair that are not visible to us from the graphic. Iā€™m not sure if the etchings are in glass or wood; but there are symbols from the coat of arms etched into different panes. The altar is not actually white, as it appears in the graphic, but very light pine.

The white actually looks very beautiful against the grey English sky, because it disappears, leaving only the blue background. Some of the blue panels are actually screens. One side cleverly flipped to unveil the portrait of Bl. John Henry Newman.

There are details here that are definitely admirable and were carefully thought out. The white walls on either side, with Bl. John Newmanā€™s words ā€œHeart speaks unto heartā€, actually do justice to the simplicity of this great thinker and holy man who was very retiring and wanted nothing of him to remain after his death. In some strange sense, they are very much like him, the white walls are like a whisper that is barely noticeable, yet very present. Iā€™m remembering how the Cardinal deliberately set it up so that there would be no physical remains of him after his death by having compost spread over his coffin. We have nothing to show the world for his presence but the whisper of his voice that speaks unto the heart of those who will listen. It is actually very appropriate that the physical setting be so simple that itā€™s almost a whisper against the sky and the trees that surround it, because the Cardinal himself was a very simple voice that shouted the faith without making himself too evident.

I donā€™t understand how you ā€œregretā€ the beaitification of John Henry Newman. Help me to understand. We are not doing the beatifying. The beatification is a public acknowledgement of what God has done and is doing through the prayers and intercession of the Blessed. How can we regret what God has done or the fact that the Church acknowledges it and brings it to the attention to the world? Are we not to make public the work of God, because we disagree with the instrument whom he uses?

Ugg. I think people are just criticizing every thing the church is doing for the sake of criticizing. I donā€™t think it is productive or reverent to treat the efforts of the bishops so flippantly.

This is the page in question from the pamphlet. It was directed to crowd management staff in Britain, who may or may not have been Catholic, or even Anglican, and might not be familiar with the proper reverent terms for the beautification mass.

Maybe a note should be given at the top of the page to the effect ā€œTo preserve the solemnity of the occasion, please use these official terms in lieu of other terms used for secular eventsā€ to avoid some criticism.

Itā€™s a very simple design. When I watched it live, there were details that were very pretty. I still wish that there were some other way to deal with the accoustics better than the dish. The dish is actually distracting from the background. The background colors were very pretty. They are not as bold as they are in the graphic. When the screen changed and Bl. John Newmanā€™s portrait was exposed, it added something to the background. The symbols on the altar and the chair were well done and unique. I have never seen any other design incorporate the Holy Fatherā€™s coat of arms. I also felt that the design reflects the simplicity of John Newman himself. Given the lack of funds, they really had to go with something very simple and inexpensive, especially when youā€™re gong to tear it down.

The ā€œgigā€ was just part of the glossory for the workers. Remember, these people may not understand what the words mean. They are used to setting up and orchastrating secular events. Also, having lived in England, I know that words donā€™t have the same nuance on both sides of the Atlantic, even when they mean the same thing. A gid to an American sounds vulgar. To a Briton, itā€™s not.

Simplicity is fine but this isnā€™t simplicity - itā€™s modern lavish. Not a statue of a saint in sight, just a lot of mod architecture and some nice-sounding phrases in giant lettering worded in such a way as to eliminate the possibility of being offensive to anyone.

Sadly, Iā€™m sure something like this could have been arranged for a small fraction of the cost:

I wonā€™t argue with you an the architecture, because simplicity is very subjective. The bold is mine. The words are not nice sounding phrases. These are the words from the Cardinalā€™s Coat of Arms ā€œCor ad Cor Loquitorā€ = ā€œHear calls unto heartā€. It was very appropriate to have that there. Afterall, it was his beatification.

I was at the Beatification Mass, and yes, I found the edifice quite ugly, even having seen it beforehand. Thankfully, I was in a good spot and could focus on the Holy Father and the picture of Blessed John Henry. I too was pleasantly surprised when his picture was revealed.
