Pope welcomes traditionalist pilgrims

I think this is great. I think he dispels any misconceptions that people have about the two forms of the mass being disproportionate to each other in holiness and theology. The difference is in form, not in essence.

I also hope that the Traditionalist pilgrims felt welcome at the Vatican. I often feel sorry for some of these groups, because they feel unwelcome or insignificant. This certainly is not true. There is no human being who is unwelcome in the Church and everyone is significant, because each person is like a fingerprint of the Creator.

I’d like to see the Pope offer an EF Mass some day (I’m sure the Swiss Guard can fill in the roles formerly held by the Noble and Palatine Guards).

All things are possible. However, I don’t foresee this happening. I believe that His Holiness would be concerned about sending an unintended message, that being that the Traditionalist Movement has his special attention. Even his quiet and discrete attention to the SSPX has given some people the wrong message. Some people feel that he’s giving to the SSPX what no pope has ever given to any legitimate religious order in the Church and there are some hurt feelings over this. I don’t believe that his attention to the SSPX has anything to do with favor, but with concern that left unchecked it can lead into another schism. For those who are not privy to the details, it looks differently.

The same can happen with a public celebration of the Extraordinary Form. I think that as long as many people associate the EF with the SSPX, the time is not right. As the number of non SSPX priests celebrating the EF grows and the SSPX becomes just another group out there, then the time will come when the papacy can have a public celebration without people making incorrect associations and assumptions.

Remember, I’m speculating here. I have no insider information. However, having been in positions of authority in the Church, I’m asking myself, “How would I handle this if it were me?” My gut tells me to wait. Don’t do this now, because it can look like another overture to the SSPX. Frankly, even people who are very traditional are also getting very discouraged with the SSPX’s lack of urgency in resolving this matter. Rome seems to be making the overtures and is the party always being put on hold.

It is so unfortunate, when worship is politicized. This is why I was so happy that the FSSP and other traditionalists were warmly received at the Vatican. We need to disconnect the EF from the SSPX. I hope that traditionalist institutes and mainstream Catholics who have a love for the EF will join together more often for public worship to show the world that the EF belongs to the Church, not to this group or that one.

As far as the pope celebrating it in public, as the Angel Gabriel said, “Nothing is impossible for God.”
