Today, the popular video game character Tracer from the popular video game Overwatch, was revealed to be lesbian in the Official Overwatch Comics.

It is possible she is also bisexual, but most people assume she is just lesbian.

I was very sad to find this out, and even sadder considering I play as Tracer. Literally, I was playing Overwatch, went downstairs to check my Twitter, and found out.

Should we Catholics still play Overwatch, even though a character is Lesbian? What about playing as her? I’m not certain.

Thanks, and God Bless you! 😃

It’s a problem if you play it to somehow support homosexual actions.

Otherwise, your call. Pray, get guidance if necessary and follow your conscience.

I’ve basically decided not to go see the new Star Wars movie because I don’t care to give my money to writers who go out of their way to insinuate various things about me.

There is nothing sinful about being a lesbian. The catechism clearly states that people do not choose their sexual orientation. The behaviors they may engage in may be sinful but just being gay or lesbian is not a sin. Feel free to play your game.

What did the new Star Wars do?

No attacks at all intended on the OP. This is an honest question, I can see that.

I used to be the kind of person who got “offended” about things. Or rather, I joined in the offendedness of my fellow Catholics at some evil someone was doing. But I never really knew how to express to non-Christians how I can balance that fact with the fact that Jesus loves everyone and desires all men to be with Him in happiness.

A lot of reading and exposure to the Ordinariate has opened my eyes and softened my heart to a new idea - new to me, anyway: that maybe we ought to begin by loving what is good in the other, rather than with the fact that the other has flaws.

In any case, judge for yourself. Is what I gain from this more than what I lose, based on the rule God has established in His Church? Do remember, while human sexuality is an integral part of our faith, so are human relationships - love of neighbour, and self-sacrifice. Also remember you’re a moral agent, capable of critical thought. Is this actually going to change what God teaches? It may give me sympathy for those who commit this sin; can I trust myself to find God in them, and draw it out as best I can?

The main questions you need to ask are whether God is in what I see (the answer is always yes), whether I can see where God is, and whether I can pursue the good in what I see without losing sight of God. Sometimes the answer to that is no.

Bring it before God. And think about it, too.

Nooooo. How disappointing. My husband grew up playing Blizzard’s games WarCraft and StarCraft. He even was invited for an in person interview there. Just let me tell him about the character in overwatch and he will not believe it. :stretcher:

A mere depiction that a character lives a sinful life in a work of fiction, even if it is not explicitly denounced as such, does not constitute that the work itself is sinful, nor that purchasing it is.

On the other hand, if this work is being used to promote a sinful behavior as good, then is is scandalous and at the least you shouldn’t contribute to its financial success or popularity. That doesn’t mean that just reading it would be a sin, unless it becomes pornographic or is leading you towards sinful behavior as well.

You have to understand that in this world, and especially in this neo-pagan era, many works of art will be tainted by a loss of understanding of virtue and objective truth. That doesn’t mean that we can’t get something good from those works- Whether they are still goods depends on the level of tainted-ness and how entrenched it is in its foundation.

For example, I enjoyed V for Vendetta, even though it makes a positive depiction of a homosexual union and portrays homosexuals as a persecuted minority in its world. I wouldn’t have written such a storyline into the graphic novel or movie, but I don’t think that invalidates the whole work and I can still enjoy it.

On the other hand, if I consumed media which steered me towards accepting homosexuality as “normal” and “good”, then I would have to stop, because it is not. The Bible has no problem with depicting immoral people, lifestyles and acts. But it doesn’t glorify those either.

I think that by injecting a lesbian character into a game played by youth is an attempt to “socially engineer” our attitudes and normalize sinful lifestyles. While being a homosexual is not a sin, homosexual acts are. Many of these acts would also be sinful if the person committing them was heterosexual as well.

It would be the same as if it the character was an adulterer, giving the impression that that behavior is normal or even healthy.

Well, I already got the game, so the company made its money. I’m not going to purchase anything more to it, so I guess I’m not supporting them financially, and let’s be honest here, that’s what they’re after.

I do not think homosexuality is good or normal (correct) and if this game is steering me to believe that (which it isn’t) it should be avoided. Although then again, that’s just the comics. No where in the game does it actually show the character as Lesbian.

I honestly believe we’re ok on this one.

The characters are not real. The character could be a cyborg, alien, or two headed unicorn. While it’s annoying that the creators are advancing an agenda, it’s all fake…

I think whichever LGBT organisation was pestering Blizzard about their lack of sexually diverse characters is to blame here, why is it important to say this character is lesbian? When I play Overwatch, the sexuality of the character does not even come in to my mind!

These LGBT organisations are looking for things in games which do not even need to be mentioned because they’re irrelevant. They’re wanting more gay video game characters for their agenda so they pester Blizzard about it until Blizzard is like “Yeah, Tracer’s gay, she’s a girl with boys hair.” Problem solved. No LGBT people pestering them anymore!

I think you are right. A lot of the overwhelming presence of homosexual characters in media is due to pressure from interest groups. The reality is, despite what the pressure groups say, that most people are tolerant. That is they put up with something they don’t like. We mostly continue to consume media because we are tolerant. The problem is media is very influential on our thoughts and particularly younger folks. It conditions our minds. I think we should actually be far less tolerant of this and other sins in our media.

Tracer is basically Ms. Fan Service. Her being a lesbian seems less pandering to the LGBT community and more… fan service.

Russia has banned the webcomic because of their anti-LGBT laws meaning their media is not allowed to promote LGBT lifestyle, so what you were saying about the media, Russia is on top of that!

Nail on the head, 100%.

In college, in the communication departments, we were taught to do this kind of stuff.

It is super that this happened. One funny meme I saw was the Kermit/Sith Kermit complaining about Tracer not dating D’Va. If I ever get this game I am going to play Tracer.
