This is where my knowledge starts to run dry, but I’m relatively certain “silence” refers to the failure to speak up to stop a future/impending sin. This requires the act to be illegal. As such, telling the kids wouldn’t be necessary, although lying to them about it would be a separate issue.

Exactly. It IS a crime against God’s laws, the laws of nature, for the sister to engage in this utterly evil activity. So to treat the money as if it came from criminal activity isn’t a stretch at all.

I read that one from Abby. I think in the tiny amount of space involved, it can be hard to get enough facts. I would have liked to know more about the relationship between the family and the aunt. Does the aunt know about the families feelings about her activities? Have they hashed this out and come to some kind of conclusion as a family about how they will interact?
If we say no, they can’t accept the money, what about other items from the aunt? A Christmas present, or an ice-cream? Can the mother go out for dinner with her sister and accept if the sister offers to pay? Can they drive in the car bought with the sister’s money on the way to the restaurant?
What if the relative in question that made his money off of a legal, but immoral enterprise - say he owns a casino, or works at a company that discharges waste into the environment, or is a manager in a popular union-busting company?

Personally I think the Mother should have a serious sit down with Sis and explain how she disapproves of Sis’s profession. If Sis can accept that, and the fact Mom will tell the kids that she doesn’t approve of Sis’s actions, and still wants to give the money, I think that’s fine. It is Sis’s decision what to do with her money and you really want to punish the kids because their aunt chose a less than desirable profession. Maybe she could tell the sister it is conditional and the children will get to decide when they are old enough to make a moral decision.
Also, I think this situation is different from the situation with the cop because the cop is getting the money illegally. The sister is performing an immoral, although perfectly legal, action to get the money. And the Mom isn’t doing anything innately wrong by simply accepting money, she should just make sure her objections to the sister’s profession are clear.
And as for children working harder when the earn the money, maybe so, but it is hard to get scholarships. I got a 30 on my ACT and was ranked 3rd in my class. I go to a public college. I got very little financial aid. 5,500 out of an estimated 24,000 required for tuition, room, board, books, supplies, transportation, etc.

In reality the don’t ask don’t tell rule applies as to where the money was earned. Many porn stars receive bucks long after they’ve departed from the business as part of their contracts and sales CAF would take the money in less than a NY heartbeat, your parish would take the money, no questions asked. Let’s be realistic as to accepting donations. The money will go somewhere for some purpose. I would not get hung up on it, but more thought out, as I said, a trust with a bank to manage and as co-trustee with a family member perhaps, but minimum fees do apply which is a problem on a small trust account as to professional trustees. If it costs more than 1 1/2% a year to manage, those amounts say under $250K are just not viable today, and leaving it with a lawyer to manage? No way, another no-no…
