Pornography on the sidewalk (?!)

What would you do? I was taking a walk and found a bunch of pages from a pornography magazine strewn across the sidewalk and a very busy street. Very startling stuff. Was I obligated to pick it up and throw it away so that others could not see it? Should I call to city to have them take care of it–or should I just wait for a big snowstorm tonight to do it?

I was about to pick it up but though, wait, who knows how filthy this might be (and I"m pretty OCD about hygiene). So I just left it.

What ought I have done?

Perhaps you could have kicked/shuffled it into some bushes or some out of the way place with your foot? You have pleanty of reasons to not pick it up (cleanliness, temptation, etc).

It is partly a prudential judgment. There can be various aspects to consider (and ones confessor can advise one in ones particular case).

It may be rather risky to go into the busy street for example.

And for some it can be too risky for their own soul in the first place…

I have run across such myself on the side of the road and carefully with squinted -guarded eyes (not to be as recommended on a busy street!) angerly snatched it up in a way that concealed what it was -protecting me and others…and took to to be disposed of carefully.

But not being there…and it not being me …(and considering your stated difficulties with OCD -like hygene)…and I do not know the exact circumstance it is hard to say what one ought to do -if anything at this point.

I doubt very much the city will make a special trip to pick up litter. If you can do it without harm to yourself, you should pick up any litter you see and put it in the trash, that is just being a good citizen. Were you obligated? No. e

I always pick up garbage when walking, would I risk my life running into the street? NO.

What you could do is maybe get some rubber gloves & pick it up though, who knows if some sex attict with some std was using it. Or just pray & leave it to God.

Easy, just throw it away.

I came across some ultra XXX home porn left in a desk (a change in cubicals resulted in my acquiring a former employees desk). He, presumably accidentally left these DVDs and photos in the desk. I, of course disposed of them but not before destroying them so that they could not end up in anybody elses hands. I broke the DVDs and ripped up the paper photos.

To this day I wonder about the guy who left them behind. Once terminated from the job he could not get back in I assume. I assume he must have recalled what the left behind and realized sooner or later someone (a former co-worker most likely) would find the many many DVDs and photos. He’ll never know only one person saw them (me) and they were all destroyed.

He is probably still sweating this one out.

We rented a holiday appartment once. When we fird up the DVD player we found there was a pornographic DVD inside. The eject mechanism was broken so no matter whaat we did we couldn’t eject that DVD. So we called the rental agency and they sent a guy over to pick it up. It just shows what people had rented there prior to us.

I’d pick up the pages that are on the sidewalk, shred them and put a handful of shreds in a random number of public trashcans (if there’s any available). The ones on the street I’d leave alone: as bad as the stuff is, it’s not worth getting killed or seriously injured over.

I think, in some cases, this is a deliberate effort to foster temptation. Use gloves, remove it, and put it in a plastic garbage bag and garbage container. Years ago, a man had thrown out a small box of Playboys. The local moms collected the box and disposed of it, knowing that us male kids would be tempted. How, they did not say.

I have no idea what our obligation is in this situation. But personally, if I thought I could help keep someone else from temptation, I would probably risk the germs in order to dispose of the magazines. I’ve picked up litter from the street (not even offensive litter like you’re talking about), and I’ve picked up dirty tissues from the floor at church. And nothing bad has ever happened to me from that. I probably wouldn’t risk getting hit by a car, though.
