Rather, I argue that there is no alternative to the act of existing because the alternative to existence, an existent nothing, is a logical contradiction. There is simply no logically valid alternative to the act of existing, which Aquinas defined as G-d.
How would you answer a materialist’s objection that “the act of existing” is merely a phrase which doesn’t refer to anything? Individual objects exist but it is logically possible that they could have appeared spontaneously or have always existed…
