More bad news for the Archdiocese of Detroit, an article in today’s Detroit Free Press www.freep.com/news/religion/catholics14e_20041014.htm says that some time in late 2005 a plan will be in place to that will result in the close of several parishes. The article states that this is due mainly to a shortage of Priests, if the numbers remain the same by 2006 there will be seven fewer Priests then parishes, and by 2009 29 fewer Priests, this does not sound good at all. I remember back in '89 between 20-30 parishes closed and here we are 15 years later facing a similar problem.

For my two cents I’d like to point out that when it comes to vocations in the archdiocese it’s clear the more orthodox parishes produce Priests, for example both Divine Child and SS. Cyril and Methodius had multiple candidates ordained this past year, while it doesn’t appear to me that the more liberal parishes are producing. Perhaps if the archdiocese as a whole committed to a return to orthodoxy this shortage would turn around.

The sad thing is that some of the large and affluent parishes in the suburbs are barely recognizable as Catholic. From the liturgical abuses to the fluffy homilies to the gymnasium architecture, parishes like Our Lady of Good Counsel in Plymouth Twp really need a major overhaul or should be dissolved.

I couldn’t agree more, OLOGC is a very bizarre church, I couldn’t find any holy water while I was there, didn’t see the tabernacle, and people were walking behind the altar during the entire mass, in addition the Choir being up front elevated and facing the rest of the laity. I tried bringing this up with an usher(he was wearing at t-shirt and shorts BTW) when I mentioned the lack of statues he said that the parish finds them distracting, I couldn’t believe my ears, I then mentioned the choir, people behind the altar etc, and was told that vatican 2 required everything to be close to the people, we went back and forth for a bit, but I tried to make my point and leave it at that. As sad as it is I can’t say I’m surprised our pro-abort governor feels at home there, it looks like they spent alot of money on the church, and as far as I’m concerned it wasn’t worth it. I wont be back.

Bring in the FSSP, Institute of Christ the King, Society of St.Vincent Ferrer, Canons of New Jerusalem, Barroux Benedictines here!!! Oh, if our Archbishop would be so nice to us as to do this!!
THESE ORDERS COULD EASILY GIVE DETROIT 7 PRIESTS BEFORE 2007!!!

Regarding OLOGC, that is the parish whose major claim to fame of late is that it is the home parish of our state’s “wonderful” pro-abortion “Catholic” governor, Jenny G (Jennifer Granholm). She was a reader there, I do believe. Such a pity. So many Catholics being led astray. My husband’s aunt and uncle belong there and believe it accurately reflects the Catholic Church.

Yeah, and the ***. Pastor actually supported Granholm publicly! Then the Pastor supported the ***. Pastor!

Another nearby parish that is the pits is St. John Newman in Canton Twp. They have a mega audio visual system but no kneelers, they change the words of the Nicene Creed “and then he became HUMAN”, etc. I could go on but you get the point.

Most of this is of the Archdocese making. They put in priests who can’t/won’t do their jobs and then wonder why people leave the parishes. I used to work for one of the Catholic schools in Detroit. Then in came a new priest who wanted to close the school. He ran the place into the ground and made sure it was closed. So sad. It was a wonderful school. I’m sure that parish will be on the list–which is a shame as it’s one of the older Churches in the city. Sorry for the venting. I have many friends still in MI and I’m sure this is sad news for them.

whoa that’s just awful about OLGC! What’s wrong with your bishop in Detroit?
