Could there have been a global flood - is there enough water?This is naturally the first question that arises.The surface of the globe is covered by water over 70% of its area - only 30% is dry land.The average depth of the ocean is 13,000 ft.The average height of the land is only 2,500 ft above sea level.There is 15.6 times as much water below sea level as there is land above it.If the surface of the globe were smoothed out it would be covered by a film of water 9,000 ft deep - so there is plenty of water still around - btw 75% of the earth’s strata consists of sedimentary rock layers containing fossils of millions of dead things buried in these rocks covered by water all over the earth - more later - twinc

Well, it certainly covered the inhabited part of the planet, as far as the writers of the Bible knew.

Of course, so many people even today think their own personal experience of anything is the way it is all over the world, so it’s not just a peculiarity of ancient writers.

It has been recently found that oceans worth of water are locked into the rocks in the depths of the earth.

And I think a liquid ocean under China. (I will have to recheck that)

Some speculate the giant water clouds that exist in space did it. A few billion years ago the Earth was almost completely covered in water. newscientist.com/article/mg20126882.600-ancient-earth-was-a-barren-waterworld.html

not so - the break up of the one landmass into many landmasses and oceans was caused by the global flood and there were then no deep ocean trenches as at Mindanao and Mariana nor any or many very high mountains which were also as a result of the global flood - twinc

I believe that there was a great flood, but that the extent of the flood as described in Scripture is a figure. Rather than taking the story of Noah and the Flood either entirely literally or entirely figuratively, I interpret it as being partly literal and partly figurative. So there was an extensive worldwide flood. But it did not literally cover every area of land and every mountain. There literally was an ark with animals on it, but there was no need to have every animal genus or species on the ark, since the flood did not kill all animals. The animals were there to represent life on earth. The ark was literal, but God used it as a figure for salvation through the Church. There was no need for the ark to be literally the salvation of all humans and all animals.

Also, I think that W. Bruce Masse’s theory is probably correct, that the flood was caused by a comet striking the Indian Ocean, causing an unimaginable quantity of water to be thrown into the atmosphere. This resulted in great rainstorms worldwide and great flooding. He dates the flood to 2807 B.C.

Interesting question. What I asked myself was, “How did He do it?”

Since I’m an amateur astronomer with an imagination, and knew there’s chemicals in interplanetary space, I wondered if a cloud of H[sub]2[/sub]O in space, that came close enough to earth to respond to this planet’s gravity and dump its water vapor on earth, along with ‘natural’ rains and ‘waters from the foundations’ of earth, could have produced all the water needed.

After reading this thread, there may have been no need for the interplanetary cloud of water vapor, to produce enough water to flood all the inhabited globe. I would think that flooding all the inhabited areas of Earth, and their environs, could be called ‘all the land of the Earth was flooded’.

I get the idea from the scripture, that the purpose of the flood was to cleanse the world of all the sinners and all the creatures that were kept from God’s providence by all those sins.
