I had a question regarding the posture of the assembly during the adoration of the Cross. When the priest chants, “Behold the wood of the cross…,” are the people supposed to be kneeling, sitting, or standing? What about during the actual adoration? During the adoration, do the people kneel, sit, or stand?

I honestly don’t know what we should be doing, but while our Deacon processed with the cross, we stood. We remained standing until our row went up for adoration and then we sat when we returned to our seats. We have done it this way for years so I am presuming this is acceptable.

Here the people stood while Father carried the Cross down the aisle.

According to the Roman Missal, they should kneel after the Venite Adoremus. As for us, we stood and knelt only after the third Ecce Lignum and Venite.

We stood as the Cross was carried in, and stopped a third way up the aisle for each sung refrain.
