Hello, I was just wondering if anybody knew for sure how the Priest was supposed to be holding his hands during the Our Father, or how your parish Priest holds his hands. Just curious. Thank you and God bless.

Our priest uses the orans posture - arms outstretched to his sides, slightly elevated, bent at the elbow at about a 45 degree angle, head bowed.

According to the GIRM, he is to stand with “hands extended”:152. After the Eucharistic Prayer is concluded, the priest, with hands joined, says the introduction to the Lord’s Prayer. With hands extended, he then says this prayer together with the people.
  1. After the Lord’s Prayer is concluded, the priest alone, with hands extended, says the embolism Libera nos (Deliver us). At the end, the people make the acclamation Quia tuum est regnum (For yours is the kingdom).
  2. Then the priest, with hands extended, says aloud the prayer, Domine Iesu Christe, qui dixisti (Lord Jesus Christ, you said). After this prayer is concluded, extending and then joining his hands, he gives the greeting of peace while facing the people and saying, Pax Domini sit simper vobiscum (The peace of the Lord be with you always). The people answer, Et cum spiritu tuo (And also with you). Afterwards, when appropriate, the priest adds, Offerte vobis pacem (Let us offer each other the sign of peace).

Our priest holds hands with the altar servers and/or deacon, whoever is up there with him at the time. 😦

Alas, I am often witness to this very same thing.😦 It is arguable whether the faithful are allowed to do this, but it is quite clear that the priest, concelebrants, and deacon cannot.

Oh my Goodness! That is just so sad.
Innovation gone wild!

I have also witnessed this many, many times. The Faithful simply mirror what the priest is doing on the altar. I believe this may be how “hand holding” during the Our Father started—with a priest:(
