Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) – Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has become a leading topic of discussing within pro-life circles as the 2008 presidential campaign begins to heat up. Romney, who formerly took a pro-abortion position, says he changed his views on abortion several years ago when confronted with the issue of stem cell research.

It looks like he might be a good candidate based on his pro-life views. I just hope that he truly is pro-life.

I certainly hope the GOP can field a strong pro-life candidate. HOpe to hear more on this soon.

I also hope that the GOP can field a strong pro-life candidate. I’d vote for a Constitution Party candidate if I thought they had a chance at winning. The Constitution Party is known for its pro-life views.

Ha ha, that guy is pandering to the conservatives.

If he was “formerly pro-choice” that tells me two things:
1)The LDS church must not be pro-life meaning if elected he will have no problem turning pro-choice again
2)As a supposely responsible adult and top civic leader to ever being pro-choice in the first place is a clear sign of who he really is inside. To not have believed it was a human being in the womb means he is irresponsible as a leader or worse would rather pander for liberal votes at the cost of a baby.

Dont believe for a second he had a recent devine revelation as to the dignity of the unborn, he is pandering.

Remember that Ronald Regan signed the bill legalizing abortion when he was governor of California, but changed his view prior to becoming President. He admitted an error and did his best to correct it.

It was pandering in this case as well.

You forget that there are a number of peopel who post here who are blessed with the gift of infallible judgment of other’s motives. Rest assured, if one of these people says that someone, for example Gov. Romney, is merely pandering to get votes, then it is as sure as can be that he is merely pandering.

So is it your infallible reasoing that it wasnt pandering? Or are you just expressing an opinion like the rest of us?

No, I’m being sarcastic. I don’t have an opinion about Gov. Romney one way or the other.

We’re all about repentance as Christians. I was muddled on the issue for a long time and then I was given a grace to understand. The Holy Spirit enlightens us and corrects our fallen consciences, I believe. The Saints, Mary especially, can obtain graces for us that help us to see more clearly if we cooperate.

Abortion is an issue where evil has made a conscious attempt to cloud people’s vision, twisting lanuage. I think many people who honestly seek may have this answer granted to them.

That is not to say as a voter I should not exercise prudential judgement.

I agree, it’s probably nothing more than pandering. Especially considering that the rest of the potential R field looks like a bunch of weak-kneed social moderates (read: McCain, Guiliani, Rice, et al). A candidate who sets himself/herself apart as a social conservative could win the R base. Prayerfully, pro-lifers will see the emergence of a staunch time-tested pro-life candidate.

I agree with you, I agree people can and do change, for example seeing the evil of abortion…at the same time I agree prudential judgement should never be downplayed. And on top of that when it comes to politicians we must be extra careful and recognize many of them have no limit to how low they will stoop for a vote.

So…let me run this through my head once more:
Romney and Reagan were FOR abortion - BEFORE they were against it…?..?
Hmmm, where have I heard that before? 😛

Yes, people CAN change their minds on issues.
In Romney’s case though, I find it difficult to believe that it was being confronted with stem cell research. I guess all the photos of aborted babies didn’t move him but the stem cell issue did. Whatever…

Romney is no Reagan.

If Romney became President, would he swear his oath of office upon the Book of Mormon?

That is the most brilliant question! 👍
Good job, that not only served to give me a good laugh but it also sent chills up my spine at the same time :o.
