Is it ok for someone who claims to be a devout Catholic to callbtheir sibling Judas? I was raised Catholic and believe in the Catholic teachings. I do not attend Church every Sunday but I am a kind caring individual. I have a family member that goes to church at Lea every Sunday but is cruel at times. She calls her brother Judas, and not in a joking way. This really makes me sad. Is this type of behavior ok?

This makes me sad, too.

It’s not OK not to “attend Church every Sunday”
It’s not OK to be “cruel at times”

It seems you both have things to work on.

It IS a colloquialism for someone who betrays others. I supposed it COULD also be said seriously IF the person is referring to the IDEA of betrayal, but then it would run the risk of equating one’s self with our Lord, which is expressly forbidden in sacred scripture. Maybe you could INNOCENTLY ask her how she means the phrase. Her knee-jerk reaction will probably be to say that she’s NOT raising herself to equality with Jesus, and she MAY be correct, but you’d at least have planted a seed. If she’s as pious as her attendance at mass would suggest it may be the seed that fell on good soil. For your part, go to confession, then offer it up at the next mass. My parish has confessions right before the vigil mass on Saturday; that would make it easier for you if yours does as well. Good luck!

Siblings use words, from playful teasing to outright meanness.

The bare minimum to be a practicing Catholic is to be of course, validly baptized.

To attend Mass on Sundays and other Holy Days of Obligation

To receive the Sacrament of Confession at least once per year if you are aware of any serious sin, Communion at least once per year during the Easter season (some places extended to Lent)

Obey the Church laws wrt marriage, fasting and abstaining.

Support the local parish to the best of your ability.

Love the Lord Your God with all your heart, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself.
