I have a very dear friend, Casey, who, for the three years that I have known him, has been decidedly ambivalent about God, faith, etc.
He has had much happen to him in this time. His girl friend aborted his child. His dear friend and mentor passed away after a serious surgery…and more stuff.

Through this, he has searched, and tried to make sense, see if there could be an outside force, a God. I’ve prayed for him constantly through this, that he might have a way to accept God’s existence even though he relies on science so much.

Recently, in the past couple of weeks, this came to a head, and, after much struggle, he had a breakthrough. The ordered nature of molecules and atoms…sure it must be evidence of a higher being. Of God!

Then, last week, Casey’s good friend died in a car accident. 19 years old, wholly committed to his faith (Baptist), worked two jobs to pay for school and a car, and just proposed to his girlfriend, and never in the time that Casey knew Ethan did he ever once hear him speak ill of another human being.

Now that Casey has been able to admit God’s existence, he wishes he couldn’t, because understanding why an omnipotent, all loving God would allow one so young, who worked so hard to die and not someone who ‘deserved’ it doesn’t make sense. And in that vein of thought, why would God have allowed his mentor to die slowly and painfully, a vegetable? Or his child to be aborted? Now it seems to him that God is just a mean sonofa.

I have no answer’s for him except saying my faith doesn’t believe that God is as vicious, or as vindictive as all that. Nor will I say what the three preacher’s said at his friend’s funeral: ‘God has a purpose’, ‘It was his time’, ‘He is needed in heaven’ etc. I am not going to say that his friend had an expiration date on him! And, while God may have a purpose, I can’t say what that is, and it is no comfort.

Casey is a good man, an amazing friend, and he desperately wants to believe in God, but it seems too much for him. Please pray for him.

Lord, please help Casey to believe in you and help him to know that you are good. Please help him to grow deeper in his understanding that you are God and Creator of us all and of the entire universe. Help Casey to know that you are our heavenly Father and love us more than we could ever possibly love ourselves or any other human being. Help Casey to grow in faith and to one day become a member of your Mystical Body on earth, the Catholic Church…so he can receive you in the sacraments and grow deeper in his faith and purer in his love. Thank you, Lord, for hearing my prayer.
