Pray, Pay and Obey

On Sirius radio channel 130 the Fr said the role of lay people is to pray, pay and obey.

Agree to that?

In a way.

Like it is the role of religious to pray and obey, like it is the role of priests to pray, offer the sacraments and obey. In essence, it is a saying, that captures some of the main roles of the laity but certainly not all the roles of the laity.

Supporting the Church is one of the pillars of Catholicism. And praying, who could say that is not their job? Obey, this one everyone always seems to balk at, but it we actually believe what we claim the Church to be, then this should really be a no brainer. Also, everyone is supposed to obey. Maybe some Padre Pio is in order? Priests promise to obey their bishops, the bishops the pope, religious their superior, etc.
so to are the laity supposed to obey their priests, bishops, Pope.

Yes. And where we have questions, we should raise them respectfully while still obeying.

Agreed. We are to follow the will of God and obey both the doctrine of the Church and the directions of its leaders, unless of course the directions of those leaders contravenes the doctrine.

Obviously the laity play crucial roles in church leadership at the local level, and I think this statement was a bit too flip about that. But we should also remember that being on the parish council doesn’t put one on equal or even close to equal footing with the pastor and he, in turn, is subject to the authority of his bishop. This ain’t a democracy. And that’s a good thing!

Of course when a parish priest is corrupt or teaches in contradiction with the Church it is the laity’s job to appeal to the bishop. (after politely discussing it with the priest, of course)

Something tells me there was more to the good Father’s message than that sound bite. Certainly the sound bite cannot stand without qualification or explanation. There are too many ways it can be taken the wrong way.

Are you certain he said that this is the role of the laity, and not that this used to be how people thought about the role of the laity?

Seems like a silly slogan that will be easily misunderstood and turn people off- foolishness if it wasn’t clearly explained.
