Continuing the discussion from Purgatory and prayer:

Catfinger77’s thread above brought up another (more general) question about prayer itself.

I have always thought souls cannot pray after death, but, no, they can pray. We pray to the Saints who have gone before us to pray and intercede for us. Having a Saint pray for us is certainly different than asking a soul in purgatory to pray for us. But either way the dead can pray for us.

But, still, here’s the interesting part, if I have it right, the soul cannot pray for itself after death… I think because it is confronting its judgment?

That seems kind of odd. The soul can pray for itself and others while it is alive on earth, but it can (at best) only pray for others after it has passed. Is that true?

It would not logical. Those in Hell are there forever so praying for themselves would be meaningless.
Those in Purgatory and Heaven are already saved so praying for themselves would be meaningless.

Then that seems to say a lot about life here on earth while we are alive. or perhaps what prayer is… you’re right it confuses me…

So - in other words, but without answering my own question - why would a soul alive on earth be able to pray for itself when it cannot do so after it dies… but at the same time be able to pray for others in either life or death (unless it is in hell)?

I think the part I dont get is… while alive we’re supposed to pray here on earth but not be self-centered…

Yet a dead person cannot pray themselves, although they are supposed to pray for others… without arguing about it… how is it possible if the person isnt even alive in the normal sense of being a living human?

Prayers for the dead mean prayers for those in Purgatory to try to get them into Heaven quicker.
Pointless praying for those in Hell.
Pointless praying for those in Heaven as they are already there and do not need our prayers.

Praying for yourself while alive makes a lot sense. Pray to be strong in your faith and not to sin.
