I don’t post here often, but I have a question.

A couple is engaged to be married. Is it okay to pray for the marriage not to happen and that one of the parties involved will marry you instead? Or, must you pray for their happiness and that God will give you peace to accept the situation?

Rather a pressing issue at the moment…

I would pray for their happiness, for your peace, and for the patience to wait for God’s will to be done.

Hi HaroldA,

I would not pray for that particular intention, rather I would pray that God’s will is done in this matter for both you and the other two.

That way you are praying for the best possible outcome.

I would pray for their happiness, for your peace, and for the patience to wait for God’s will to be done.
Exactly.

As hard as it is…it’s totally fruitless because the expectation is on the couple to break up and not on being open to God’s will.

Personally, I think it’s disingenuous and borderline selfish for someone to hope and pray for an engaged couple to break up and for one of those parties to marry you instead.

When I was engaged…I was engaged for a reason. Because I wanted to spend my life with my fiancé and couldn’t wait to get married and be his wife for the rest of our lives and have children with him.

I would have been disappointed and weirded out that anyone would want our engagement or marriage to break up because someone else wanted to be with me.

It’s hard…I know.
My first boyfriend moved on from me fairly quickly and met a girl and got married to her a couple of years after we broke up.

When I was told that he was engaged…it was hard to accept because I was still single and all of those feeling rushed back to me.
I wanted him to feel the way he felt about her to me…despite knowing that we weren’t right for each other and we had broken up for a good reason.

Be careful what you ask for…

I would recommend listening to the following song- Unanswered Prayers by Garth Brooks

Pray that you are strengthened to trust God, pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The rest will fall into place…

(Presuming you are male based off your user name.)

If it were you engaged to the lady in question, how would you feel if somebody were actively praying for your engagement to break up so he could marry her instead?

You wouldn’t like it much, would you? It would probably strike you as mean and selfish, and you’d be hurt and angry, wouldn’t you?

What scenario are you imagining, exactly? That you pray to God that the lady will suddenly have an epiphany and realize that you are her One True Love and she dumps the man that she’s spent a lot of time building a relationship with? You realize that only happens in romantic comedies, yes? (Which mysteriously tend to downplay how hurt the dumped party will be as a result of this?)

Or that the man will dump her, leaving her free for you, and your plan to be waiting by when she gets dumped, and declare how much you’ve always loved her, and for her to fall into your arms? Again, you do realize that only happens in the movies? In reality, she’s likely to be heartbroken, and need time to heal, and even when she does….there is no guarantee she would choose you.

Praying to God that she’ll cast her eyes your way isn’t love. It’s objectifying her. She’s not a person to you, she’s something to be obtained, no matter who gets hurt to grant your desire.

Did you ever have a chance with her when she was single? Yes? Then why didn’t it work out? No? Again, why didn’t it work out?

Did you meet her after she was already in a serious relationship? Then sorry, but the fates were already sending you a sign that she wasn’t the one for you. Take what you admire about her and look for a single woman with the same qualities—obviously these are what attract you.

You can pray for anything, But reflect on Romans 8:26. We often do not pray as we ought.

I would suggest that such a prayer treats God as a magical Santa Claus giving us goodies we want. It also treats the woman in question as a object, not a person.

Perhaps you need some counseling to get over your infatuation with this woman and move on to healthy relationships.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, I’m being selfish at the moment. And, yes, intellectually I know that to pray for a couple to break up is, well, wrong.

But the heart feels the way it feels.

So the prayer will be for their happiness, my peace, and that God’s will be done.

Still, it ain’t easy!

Thanks again.

You don’t have to pray for their happiness, if that is too hard at the moment; just that God’s will in this matter be done.

In general, that is what we should in any case pray for.

Pray for God’s will to be done. We cannot know the future but God does!
