Praying for our priests.

I made a change in myself to go to confession at least once a month this past year, and it is one of the changes that completely changed my life. I am happy to say I had many more confessions than my once a month goal, and they were all wonderful, except for one. I went into confession with a new priest at a different church that was close to my school, so it was easy to just swing by that day. It was a rough day for me, and I remember crying in the line, I won’t go into detail as to why I was emotional, but I was hoping no one would be behind me in the confession line because I wanted to be last, and I groaned when a woman showed up after me and got into line. To my surprise, she was probably sent by the Holy Spirit or by our beautiful Mother Mary because she gave me a lot of comfort that day, and it was exactly what I needed, and unfortunately did not receive in confession. During my confession, I felt that the priest was attacking me in ways, and truly did not understand my culture, nor did he want to take the time to understand it. I sensed that he had some personal angers in his own heart that he was carrying into my confession. Like I said, I’ve gone to confession a lot in this past year, and they’ve all been great except for that one. I firmly believe that this priest was just having a bad day, but this instance made me feel that it’s important to pray for our priests. Confession is quite a vulnerable sacrament, and it can be hard, especially when you’re first trying to make it a habit. Had I gone to a confession like this one earlier this year when I was still struggling to attend confession frequently, I’m sure it would have affected me much more than it did at a time when I knew that confessions were not like that. I would like to offer up prayers for our priests, especially during confessions, that they may allow the Holy Spirit to speak through them, and leave behind anything that they are carrying in their personal lives.

Our priests are human, and they make mistakes. I’ve had some priests pick favorites in the community, and it shows, and I’ve had that bad confession, but it only reminds me that we need to pray for our priests. Priests have such a large impact on the faiths of us and our people, especially young peoples, but let these instances not draw us away from our churches and faiths, but let us pray for them, that they may follow in Christ as best they can, so as to help lead their community to do the same. Thank you for your prayers.
