A friend (Dave) of my friend (Rebecca) found out that his friend (Tom) has an inoperable brain tumor. My friend (Rebecca) asked if I knew any good prayers for people who are terminally ill. Could anyone help me answer her question? As far as I know, none of them are Catholic and therefore may balk a bit at requests for intercession from the saints, however, I am becoming more comfortable with those prayers too, so either kind is acceptable. However, if any of you know (or could direct me to) some good prayers to God, that would be best. Thanks for your help!

Hello Elisa,

God bless you and your friend. They are in my prayer.

I just googled and found out about St. Peregrine
He was cured of cancer, after he received a vision of Christ on the cross reaching out His hand to touch his impaired limb. He died in 1345 and was canonized in 1726. He is the patron of cancer patients.
Here is the Novena prayer for intercession but not “to God” directly as you were asking for.
Novena To
St. Peregrine
Glorious wonder-worker, St. Peregrine, you answered the divine call with a ready spirit, and forsook all the comforts of a life of ease and all the empty honors of the world to dedicate yourself to God in the Order of His holy Mother.
You labored manfully for the salvation of souls. In union with Jesus crucified, you endured painful sufferings with such patience as to deserve to be healed miraculously of an incurable cancer in your leg by a touch of His divine hand.
Obtain for me the grace to answer every call of God and to fulfill His will in all the events of life. Enkindle in my heart a consuming zeal for the salvation of all men.
Deliver me from the infirmities that afflict my body (especially…).
Obtain for me also a perfect resignation to the sufferings it may please God to send me, so that, imitating our crucified Savior and His sorrowful Mother, I may merit eternal glory in heaven.
St. Peregrine, pray for me and for all who invoke your aid.

God bless.

May God’s peace, love and mercy be with you all!

Praying the rosary or saying the chaplet of Divine Mercy are very beautiful and powerful prayers that we can pray for all souls especially the sick and the dying.

Here’s the website on how to say the chaplet of Divine Mercy.

God bless!

Blessed be Jesus and Mary!

Lord, forgive (Ill persons name) any sins that they may have committed.
If it is your will, raise them up to a healthy body and a sound mind to serve the residue of their days in your service and to your glory.
If it is not your will to heal them, then recognize them as a lamb of your fold and a sheep of your flock.
Send your holy angels to protect them from all spiritual harm, to guide and direct them, to counsel and defend them.
Take them into the paradise that you have prepared for those who love you.
Let them stand in the resurrection of the just on the Last Day and live with you in your glory forever more.
Amen.
Prayer for the Sick
Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the Sick, we turn to You in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the Troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with Your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in Your hands. We place our sick under Your care and humbly ask that You restore Your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge Your holy will and know that what-so-ever you do, you do for the love of us. Amen.
(sorry had to add this)… Saint Anthony is the Saint of miracles… several good prayers for healing here:

Prayer for the Sick
Omnipotent and eternal God,
the everlasting Salvation of those who believe,
hear us on behalf of Thy sick servant, [name],
for whom we beg the aid of Thy pitying mercy,
that, with his/her bodily health restored,
he/she may give thanks to Thee in Thy church.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Thanks to all of you, especially Margaret33. I’m passing these on to my friend and will certainly use them as I pray for these people. Thanks!

You’re welcome Elisa, I will pray for your friend!

Bless you,
Margaret

If they are Trinitarian Christians, the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy would be perfect. Well, it has one “Hail Mary” there, but you can just whisper that one. Mother Mary will understand, and approve of your efforts anyhow.

And if they are not upset by the “Hail Mary”, the Rosary is also an excellent prayer to recite in the presence of the sick, leading up to the triumphant Glorious Mysteries.

Also, if you can find the books by Susan Tassone, they are full of good prayers.
