Prayer in a time of uncertainty, fear, transition?

Here is one of my favorite prayers. It is by Thomas Merton and can be found in his book Thoughts in Solitude.
MY LORD GOD, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. Amen.

Here is another one of my favorites, this time from St. Ignatius of Loyola.
O Christ Jesus,
when all is darkness
and we feel our weakness
and helplessness,
give us the sense of
Your presence,
Your love,
and Your strength.
Help us to have perfect trust
in Your protecting love
and strengthening power,
so that nothing may
frighten or worry us,
for, living close to You,
we shall see Your hand,
Your purpose, Your will
through all things.

Hello Maggie. I was very fearful as I prayed this morning because I had been very far from God and full of shame and sin because I had been completely neglecting everything important in my life lately and was being lazy when there were things I needed to take care of, very important things. I prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Rosary and feared not only God’s anger but also that Jesus would not help me find a job soon because I have been so lazy and insolent lately. After I prayed I felt much better and I asked God to please show me a scripture as a message from him to me (something I do often). I then opened my favorite little book of scriptures and this is what I saw:

And he saith unto them, “Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?”
(Mark 4:40 KJV)

I’m sorry about the long intro, but I am just so excited about how much this morning has renewed my spirit.
 
Here is another one I found in my files.
I think this is also St. Ignatius of Loyola, but I am not positive.
Prayer for God’s Guidance
Father in Heaven,
You made me Your child
and called me to walk in the Light of Christ.
Free me from darkness
and keep me in the Light of Your Truth.
The Light of Jesus has scattered
the darkness of hatred and sin.
Called to that Light,
I ask for Your guidance.
Form my life in Your Truth,
my heart in Your Love.
Through the Holy Eucharist,
give me the power of Your Grace
that I may walk in the Light of Jesus
and serve Him faithfully. Amen.

I am grateful to God for this gift of a prayer from Thomas Merton. It is one that I recently discovered and have prayed as well as shared with others. Thank you for posting it here so that others too can be comforted and helped during times when the uncertainty of one’s future becomes palpably real.
