Prayer of contrition during confession

Hi.

Since I was confirmed about a month ago, I have gone to weekly confession. I don’t know the real prayer for contrition so I just pray this, which I remember well:

O my Jesus, I am sorry for my sins, for I fear the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because I have offended Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ, who deserves all my love and respect.

The priests have been fine with it, they havn’t said anything. Today I went and I prayed the one that was written and stuck on the kneeler. So my question is, is it fine to say this one?

That is similiar to this one.

Oh my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you. I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and fear the pains of Hell. But Most of all because they offend you my God who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of your grace to do my penance, to sin no more, and to avoid the near ocassion of sin.

When I say the Act of Contrition it does not follow any standard format, but it contains the ideas that are expressed in the above Act of Contrition.

I am sure that your act of contrition is fine. I would probably include something about avoiding sin in the future or something to that nature.

At the moment of sin, I knew that it was a mortal sin and yet I sinned with the intention of going confession after that (which I did). Is my confession valid ? or am I just treating it like a “washing machine” ?

Don’t let Satan fool you into staying away from confession for any reason, just go. Jesus is there waiting for you, full of His Divine Mercy. He already knows all about your struggles, and is waiting there for you to come to Him so He can pour out His Mercy upon you!

Greetings Singapore Nick,

To sin with the knowledge of going to Confession afterwards is not a good practice to be engaging in. It is a dangerous practice. What would happen if say you sinned knowing that you could go to Confession and then died before making it to Confession. This is akin to gambling and the consequences are quite heavy indeed.

Your Confession is valid only if you are truly sorry for it and have every bit of intention not to do it again with the help of God’s grace. Also doing one’s penance is important as well.

In this Confession I would share with the priest that you knew it was a mortal sin, and yet you did it anyway knowing that you would go to Confession afterwards. See what the priest says.

My priest says that as long as we state that we are sorry for sinning, he doesn’t care if we say a formal prayer or simply say how sorry we are for sinning and how we will try to do better, and MEAN it. 🙂

I think there may be a further sin of Presumption there.
2091 The first commandment is also concerned with sins against hope, namely, despair and presumption:
By despair, man ceases to hope for his personal salvation from God, for help in attaining it or for the forgiveness of his sins. Despair is contrary to God’s goodness, to his justice - for the Lord is faithful to his promises - and to his mercy.
2092 There are two kinds of presumption. Either man presumes upon his own capacities, (hoping to be able to save himself without help from on high), or he presumes upon God’s almighty power or his mercy (hoping to obtain his forgiveness without conversion and glory without merit).

It would be wise to mention this in your next confession.
