I’m increasingly bothered these past few days over the ongoing crisis happening in Ethiopia at this very moment. Ethnic tensions that have long simmered in the country have finally boiled over.
This has led to armed conflict between Ethiopia’s federal government and the Tigray Province of Ethiopia. The nation of Eritrea may be sucked into this soon too, which could be devastating to the entire Horn of Africa region.
In a country so full of life, history, happiness, culture, and theology, it’s awful to think of all these people going to bed at night wondering what may happen with their town, government, and neighbors. Bombs are going off, fighter jets flying through the air, airports seized, towns shifting loyalties… absolutely horrendous.
To think of all the people I met who playfully teased me for my fair complexion, or with who I attended Sunday Divine Liturgy (Mass), or those that gave me tours through the country, or even that one priest who blessed me in Lalibela, all suddenly thrust into a lethal country-wide conflict is an awful feeling.
