Hi,

I have a prayer rope (its my first, I bought it maybe a couple years ago ) and the knots and cross have frayed (I keep snipping the frays off)…its a 100 knot, black wool, with a tassel, I love praying with it…

My first question is I have been browsing online for a replacement and as well as prayer ropes made of wool, I keep seeing floss and waxed thread…can anybody tell me about these, as I don’t want to pay for something until i know what I am getting)

Secondly do you have any recommendations of where to get a decent prayer rope (I know there are countless online stores, but its nice to buy from somewhere that has good reviews :D)

And thirdly do you experience fraying of your prayer rope? What do you do? Do you leave it to fray or snip the frays off,?

Thanks everyone:thumbsup:

Around here, I have seen prayer ropes for sale at the Eastern Orthodox festivals in the summer–perhaps if there is an Orthodox church near you they may have some, and at a Maronite shrine–so if there are any Eastern Catholic churches near you they may be able to help. Once in a while I see them at Catholic bookstores. I hope you find what you are looking for.🙂

Yes, at the bookstores and parishes you can feel what you are getting. I have a 33-glass bead chotki made by a presbytera, wife of an Orthodox priest. Lasts longer. Yes I have seen worn and frayed ropes. It’s just cosmetic, still useful.

I’ve used a woolen rope for years without issue, other than the knots get further apart with normal use and the tassel gets frayed. I’ve never needed to snip off anything but maybe the quality of mine is different. Mine has also gone through the washer and dryer by mistake without any apparent harm, other than tightened a bit.

Mine is from the nuns at Holy Myrrhbearers Monastery made of wool from their own sheep. My husband likewise has used one from them as well for years.

You can also contact Phillip Rolfes. You can search his name here in the Forum to see other posts he’s commented on about chotki/prayer ropes. Phillip made a wonderful 40 knot rope for me years ago that I use for counting the kyrie eleison in the Hours when I am the reader for that at my parish.

I did, but he said he is not making them to sell anymore

I’m Latin rite catholic so my church shop has a pretty good selection of rosary beads in there, but unfortunately no prayer ropes:(

When you first got your wool prayer rope were the knots very very close together and tight?

There are no eastern churches near me…thats why I had to buy online for the prayer rope that I had …i have not seen any other prayer rope up close so I don’t know if mine is normal.and how it should be or if it was poorly knotted but should the knots be around an equal.size because not all mine are?

I agree that its just cosmetic, and I will continue to use mine until its unusable :D…im just looking for a replacement for when the time comes to replace it … Are the bead ones strung on chain or cord?

The knots began very close together. Over time the rope is much longer that it was at the start. The knots are still as tight, but further apart. I see the link on their website to their catalog isn’t working. You could phone or email them. When I first had in it wrapped around my wrist twice, now it goes around 4 loose times. 🙂 I might describe the tassel as quite fluffy now. You could probably ask them to make you one without the tassel if that is an issue.

The tassel isn’t really an issue, its the actual knots that seem the be fraying and one side of the cross (above the tassel) is fraying too

Not sure how you feel abut buying from eBay or Etsy, but I purchased one prayer rope from ebay and one from Etsy. The one from Etsy (33 knot) came from Greece.
There are some wonderful prayer ropes on Etsy.

I can’t answer that because I really didn’t pay attention to details when I looked at them as I was just browsing at the shrine bookstore and the EO festivals and saw them.

Haven’t had that problem, nor any of the issues you mentioned. 🙂 If you do want to order from the Sisters I’d get on it. 🙂 Their chotki are hand made there, and there is lots of other work they’re busy doing. If they don’t already have one made they’ll likely let you know how long it’s probably going to take to fill an order.

This monastery says it specializes in prayer ropes

The pictures show Russian (tassle) and Greek (knotted cross) styles.
👍

They make very nice prayer ropes, made by the sisters. They have beaded ones too. Also, they will repair a prayer rope, and even replace beads from a beaded rope if you lose them when it breaks.

Also: Their beaded ropes are strung on nylon, except for the olive wood beads that are strung on beading twine.

I had good luck with this site: stpaisiusmonastery.org/

Good product, price, timely delivered. I confess I am completely ignorant as to who these people are - can’t help you there. But I love my prayer rope (not sure of its proper name).
