I am holding a prayer service for my mom who is getting hip replacement surgery.

Can you think of any classic church songs and bible passages that would be good for the service?

She is also battling cancer. She just finished another round of chemo. The chemo is working.

And the doctors what her to have a good quality of life. She loves golfing so hopefully she will get on the course before we know it!

Do you have the opportunity to check out the Book of Blessings? The parish should have a copy with your prayer and scripture options, though maybe not the hymns.

I don’t know what selection of readings is open for you to use “officially” wherever the service will be held, if this is the type of prayer service that will involve selecting from an official list, but the list here offers a starting point for consideration.

The website of the Liturgy Office in England and Wales has a page of readings suitable for this purpose: for masses for the sick it has first readings, psalms, second readings from the New Testament, and Gospel readings, and these readings can be used as well for visitations and more general prayer for the sick. Each citation is given with a brief summary.

If you haven’t thought about it yet, there’s also a forum here where you can ask for prayer requests. People here will be more than happy to join you in prayer.
