My wife and I are 42 years old and have been married for 12 years. We have 2 boys, ages 6 and 10. I’m a cradle Catholic and my wife is Agnostic (baptized a Methodist but not really raised with any faith). Contraception has always been an issue in our marriage. In the beginning my wife wanted me to use condoms. I reluctantly agreed for many years, but my conscience kept telling me it was wrong. About 3 years ago I told her that I would not use condoms anymore, so she went on the pill. I did mention NFP but she has health issues that cause irregular cycles, so she thought it would be too much of a challenge and I dropped the issue.
Well, we were driving down to Florida for vacation last week and a commercial came on the radio about being a foster parent. My six year old said after hearing it that we have more room in the car for another child and that they could sit right in between him and his brother! We briefly talked about what it would be like having another child and we made some jokes, but it really started me thinking. Then we went to Disney World and I saw lots of families with three kids and it really started getting me depressed that our family would never be one of them.
On the way home I got the courage to tell my wife how I felt and to my utter shock she asked “Would you like me to go off the Pill?”. With tears in my eyes I said “would you?” and she said “Sure why not!”. So she did! My prayers after many many years have been answered! We will let God and nature take it course and see what happens. We are older, so I don’t expect much, but my father was born to my Grandma at 43, so that gives me hope.
Never stop praying no matter how hopeless it seems. I am so happy right now and feel much closer to both my wife and God.

How wonderful!! May God be praised through both your commitment to your wife even through trial of having different beliefs, and your wife’s decision to soften her heart and be open to new life.

I am so very happy for you! I’m also so glad to hear your son may have started leading your family by his joy at the thought of another child. How very generous of him! What a beautiful family you have.

This is so wonderful. I’m so very happy for you! No matter what “they” say, prayer works! 😃

I will pray for you and your family!

Thank you everyone. My wife is a good women and has always been supportive in the education of our children in the Catholic faith. She even attends mass with us, she just doesn’t have faith personally (it’s something she has to come to on her own). She has grown though to respect the church and its values. This was a big step for her and I know she did it because she loves me.

We made a commitment to marriage 12 years ago and have been through many challenges, but we are not quitters. I vowed to not give up on this issue because it was something my heart was telling me I should do. It was a matter of being patient, keeping the faith and waiting for the right moment for her to open her heart.

Our six year old who prodded us on this can be a little naughty at times but he has great compassion. He is the first one to ask when someone is hurt if they are ok and always knows the right thing to say to people.

If God doesn’t grant us anymore children that is ok. At least I know now that there is nothing in the way of it. If nothing happens in a few years we can always make good on that suggestion my son made about being a foster parent.

Thanks for your prayers

I’m very happy for your family, too! This is happy news!

Prayers said for you. May God bless all of you. 🙂
