Hi there,
I am new to this board, and looking for a little direction. I used to be really devoted to God, but I fell off track, but lately I’ve been really feeling Him calling me back, and finally I for once see myself listening to that call, and I’m really excited about it.

I would like to spend more time devoted to God, but I’m just not sure what always to do. I was wondering what prayers, devotions etc. I should do on a regular basis. All I have so far, is the rosary daily, regular novenas, weekly confession, and weekly mass.

Do any of you have any other ideas, or suggestions, in ways I can devote myself to God. Obviously I know I can live for Him every moment of the day, by my thoughts and actions, but I guess I’m also looking for more prayer like ways etc.

Are there any specific prayers you pray daily, or anything of the sort?

Thank you for all your help.

If you really want to do devotion, St. Bridget’s prayer is a great devotion.
tphoto.montanavision.net/page2.htm

After faithfully doing it every day for one year, it is not possible not to be transformed to certain degree.

Aslo, do Eucharist Adoration, one hour every day.
You will be amazed of the effect.

God bless!

Well thank you so much for your help. The St. Bridget’s prayer sounds like an absolutley amazing devotion, and I think I am definitley going to begin doing it.

I dont mean to sound ignorant, but what exactly is eucharist adoration? I tried a google search, but I wasn’t really sure I understood.

Hello Bins. Welc:wave:me to the board!

What you need is a daily prayer anchor. And the Church has supplied it–the Liturgy of the Hours. It is the daily prayer of the Church, as is the Mass. For you I would suggest a very simple form of the LOTH–a publication called Magnificat Magazine. It’s not really a magazine, but rather a very simplified form of LOTH for lay people, giving Morning and Evening Prayer (which are traditionally prayed first thing in the morning and in the evening, along with Night Prayer, if you want to pray it, too). It also has other prayers, meditations, the daily Mass readings, and other features. I think it would be just the thing to help you be in touch with the daily prayer of the Church, especially meditating on the daily Mass readings.

It really depends on how much time your have. You can begin the Divine Office. I like that very much. It redefines my morning and evening prayers, for one.

Your know when we go to church, the Eucharist (body of Christ)
is in the tabernacle - the gold box either in the center behind the altar or on the side. And when we see a red candle or a red light on the side of the tabernacle, we know Jesus is in the house.
If the red candle is not on, it probably means the consecrated Host is not currently in the tabernacle, or could be the candle was just burned out and has not been immediately replaced yet(that rarely happens).

Eucharist adoration is the time we spend in front of the tabernacle worshiping Jesus.

Now there is exposed Eucharist adoration and unexposed adoration.

Exposed adoration means the priest put the blessed Host on the monstrance, put the monstrance on the altar, so we can physically see Jesus. See this link.
images.google.com/images?q=monstrance&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images

The unexposed adoration is when we go to the church and pray in front of the tabernacle. We don’t see the Host, but we know Jesus is in the tabernacle. We just adore Him.

Eucharist adoration is to adore the Eucharist, which is the real presence of Jesus.

If you don’t have one hour, just do whatever time you can afford.
Being with the real presence is a tremendous blessing.

Congratulations Bins!!!

God is filling you with His grace. And you are trying to answer His call, you will NOT be dissappointed. Give God the time and he will lead you in the direction that you should go. Be patient and persistant 🙂 . I would suggest, taking some time alone with God away from everything, maybe read the Mass readings for the day. Sit, pray and LISTEN. Be honest in your prayer life, you could start with something like this… “Father I feel you calling me and I want to get closer to you but I do not know where to start, please show me the way. Please help me to love you more, to trust you more and to grow closer to you each day.” A daily devotional would probably be helpful, like the Word Among Us www.wau.org. Listening to a free download of some talks might be useful to you as well wordonfire.org/ Also, go to a church when nobody else is there, and just sit in front of the Tabernacle and let Jesus smile upon you.

You will be in my prayers may God bless you

I seem to have settled down to the following prayer schedule

Shortly after waking up, Daily Prayer for The Church Suffering, from a pamphlet put out by Requiem Press

When things are settled down and quiet, (with cats all over the place) Rosary and Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet. When I get back from work, two more Novenas before bedtime, one for the the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and the other the Novena for the Holy Spirit. This last is supposed to be done around Pentacost, but I see no reason not to start now. I need all the help I can get.

And that about fills up my time.

I can vouch for three things - the first is daily mass, as many days as you can possibly make it. Mass is THE prayer par excellence, the best thing we can possibly do this side of heaven.

The second is a Morning Offering - as soon as you wake up, consecrate your whole day to Jesus and Mary, offer them everything that happens and all your own thoughts, words and actions. It makes the whole day a prayer.

The third is Liturgy of the Hours or some approximation - whether it’s Magnificat, Shorter Christian Prayer or Christian Prayer, or the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin (which is available on the internet at EWTN.com). Having structured prayers to say, and knowing that loads of people around the world are saying them alongside you, is a great jump-start for the soul at those times where you feel the energy or the motivation is lacking a little.

People spend an hour in silent worship of our Blessed Lord in the Eucharist.

BTW, welcome to the forums!

Don’t forget about the Rosary and the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy.

My husband and I pray the morning and evening prayers from our missal. (The Roman Missal, Latin Rite, 1962, Baronious Press.)

It provides lovely “bookends” to the day. In addition to these set prayers we often add requests and thanksgivings of our own. We have also committed to praying a daily rosary and even if we are absolutely exhausted and it’s after midnight we still make the effort to make our evening offering and say at least a decade of the rosary.

The prayers include saying the Acts of Faith, Hope and Charity, Prayer to Our Guardian Angel, Prayer for Consecration of the Day,Morning Offering, Examination of Conscience, Act of Contrition, Prayer for a Happy Death, Prayer for the Faithful Departed, Prayer for Protection during the Night, I Believe in God, The Confiteor, Our Father, Hail Mary, Litany of the Blessed Virgin, Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus. Some of these are just said in the morning, some just at night, some both.

It sounds like alot but only takes about 15mins morning and evening. (Saying the full Rosary of course takes longer.) We actually started gradually, saying just a few prayers morning and evening and then built up to saying them all and we wouldn’t be without it now. We never miss evening prayers but sometimes morning prayers can get swallowed up by the demands of the kids. I have at times prayed my morning prayer in the afternoon! Oh well…get it any way you can! We would like to say a full daily Rosary together but we are only managing it a couple of days per week so far.

I would be happy to write out any of the prayers if you are interested. 🙂

Thank you all so much for your help. I’ve made a list of all the prayers you recommended, and I’m going to try and introduce myself to something new each week, so that way I wont be to overwhelmed and give up, also it’ll be really exciting to always have something new to add. I’m really going to try to go to mass atleast twice a week now, I think that that will really help. Do any of you know, are churches generally open often, when there is no mass going on? It might be nice just to go to church and pray. Thank you all again, it was just heartwarming to see the amount of responses I got in this thread, I know that God is really looking out for me, and will bless you all.

There are many formal prayers, and you are free to make up any that you wish. Anything is fine, something as simple as Jesus I offer up my day, works, joys and suffering this day for the Holy Souls in Purgatory is a great way to start the day,

BTW prayers for the Holy Souls in Purgatory will be repaid with interest so your prayers can work doubly or many times harder (theoritically).

My farorite is also the Rosary, but many times that may take too long, many short prayers during the day can work well. Just saying “Jesus, I place my trust in your divine Mercy”. or Jesus, King of Divine Mercy, forgive our sins and have mercy on friends and loved ones., or have mercy on the souls in Purgatory.

It doesn’t take much to pray, just a thought will do.

You could try the Angelus. It’s a prayer to call to mind the Incarnation, prayed at 6:00am, noon, and 6:00pm. It’s a very simple way to make prayer a consistent part of your day. Try an internet search for Angelus to learn how to pray it.

Oh thank you very much. I recall my mother saying she used to pray the angelus, growing up in Ireland. It might be a nice prayer, and tradition of sort to carry on.

I love saying the prayers for conversion of souls who are dying and will be going to Hell. Sometimes I count them out on my Rosary beads, and sometimes (like when doing housework) I just say them and let God do the math 🙂 This website explains more about it and gives the origin of the prayer: solt3.org/dying.htm I sometimes imagine dying people lying in filth and as I say each prayer, one of those people is rescued, cleaned up, and loved. Of course physically these people may not be helped, but we are helping them to turn to God at the last minute instead of choosing eternal Hell. It’s a great service you can do for your fellow human beings.

The prayer is “O Blood and Water which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of Mercy for us, I trust in You.”

When you’re waiting in lines, it’s great to see how many souls you can save from going to Hell–now *that’s *being productive in otherwise wasted time 😉

Please excuse my ignorance I am not really familiar with the Liturgy of the Hours ( I’m a convert.)

These prayers are all from my missal,The Roman Missal 1962. It is a Latin Rite Missal, published by Baronius Press.
