I quit my job today because I learned that the non-profit I was working for (created by my sister) is a way for her to sell MLM products to the poor.
I told her that the company takes advantage of poor people(the very people we were claiming to help) and often leaves them in terrible financial conditions and makes them have to file bankruptcy. She told me “it doesn’t matter” and that she didn’t care because they would still get a check if someone died. I told her people have reported not getting their money and being unable to pay for funerals, and the company not helping them at all even though they paid high fees for years.
She called me and basically tried to gaslight me, saying my mental illness(anxiety) was giving me an excuse to quit. She told me not to listen to negative reviews because people lie. I pointed out the company literally calls itself an MLM and uses the word “pyramid” in their recruiting manual. She told me not to worry about the manual and that I didn’t know about finances or the company because I don’t work for them, therefore I should stop looking into other stuff and focus on getting money from the government to fund the company. I told her I quit, over and over, on the phone while she kept trying to intimidate and argue over me. Finally, I hung up on her.
She kept being like, “so you’re saying I’m morally bankrupt?” Everyone who has a family member or friend who calls out their MLM starts guilt-tripping like this. Our mom was involved in an MLM while we were kids, and even though I didn’t fully understand finances, I saw and understood the stress and poverty it placed on our family. I remember her trying to recruit her friends and family, and becoming bitter overtime that she couldn’t get all those products out the house, and being bitter at my aunt who recruited her (scammed her) in the first place.
I told her it would be against my faith to be compliant in something I know is taking advantage of the poor. She is an active lesbian and practices voodoo/african ancestral worship. She has told me about how she’s sacrificed chickens before to “make people stop messing with her”. Sometimes I feel that she will try to curse me or do spells on me if she’s angry. I pray against it. I’m not talking to her anymore… As a side note, she asked for my social security number last month to start the company. I told her I wouldn’t give it to her because I didn’t even know what kind of company she was trying to start. I think she might have gotten my SSN and did something in my name illegally. She never had me fill out any forms(W-2 or something similar) before I started working, so I thought it was kind of sketchy. But then I thought maybe it’s because the company is still in the “testing” phase.

TL;DR: my sister practices voodoo and I think she will try to curse me or put a spell on me for quitting her business because I stood up to her for once in my life and told her I won’t support a company that takes advantage of the poor. Please pray for my peace and protection. Thank you
