My mother just informed me of an incident a few years ago. She is not Catholic but was a patient at a Catholic hospital. She is a baptized Christian but does not attend any church at this time (or during the incident). She was very sick, the doctors didn’t have a clue what was wrong but could tell it was serious because they were considering sending her to the Mayo Clinic for further testing. Anyways, a nurse who happened to be a nun was in her room. Somehow, my mother knew she was a nun. I don’t know how. Anyways, my mom asked the nun to pray for her (or might have been “pray over” her). The nun said that my mother was not Catholic so she could not say prayers for her. That was the end of the conversation. I want to know, is this true? Is there some kind of restriction on prayers for sick non-Catholics?

I’ve never heard of anybody being refused prayers simply because they’re not a Catholic. If anything the opposite is true. We do this all the time for non-Catholics who have a Catholic funeral service. I suspect that there may have been some misunderstanding here.

Somehow there is/was a misunderstanding or mis-communication. Catholics can pray for non-Catholics.

WHAT! If anyone needs our prayers, it’s non-Catholics…
