Prayers for souls in purgatory... what about the others?

It’s not God’s fault. Non-Catholics do not believe in Purgatory and do not pray for their dead. Therefore, they suffer more and longer in Purgatory because they have no one praying for them or offering Masses.

This is very true. I’ve been dedicated to praying for the Souls In Purgatory since I was a teenager. I pray for them and offer up many sacrifices.

I pray for special friends that have died and offer Masses for their speedy deliverance into Heaven. They will remember me too.

All my life I’ve heard that we need to pray for ALL Souls in Purgatory because so many other religions do not pray for their dead.

If we pray for a loved one who has died and has been delivered to Heaven, our prayers will go to another Soul that God deems in most need.

This is a beautiful and noble thing we do as Catholics.

I’ve included this web site. It has the Prayers for the Poor Souls in Purgatory. These were authorized by Pope Leo XIII over 100 years ago. By the way for those of you who don’t know what the De Profundis is; its Psalm 129.

The organization that posted the prayers may or may not be in communion with Rome. The Point is; the Prayers are definately from POPE Leo XIII. I do belive that he was in communion with Rome.

And here’s another thought -
I’m not sure if I was taught this in school or not - but I do remember a question once being asked about what if a soul you pray for has gotten to Heaven? Then, what happens to those additional prayers this particular soul no longer needs?

The answer given was that God would apply your prayers to some other soul. Hope I’m recalling correctly but I was left with the impression (way back when I was in school) that no prayer is wasted.

Remember that in every single Mass said all around the world, prayers are offered for ALL the faithful departed, usually without discrimination unless it’s being said for a particular soul. So the Church as a whole, and we in particular, are praying for them with each and every Mass which is said.

I’m having a little trouble with part of the concept of purgatory. My question isn’t regarding its existence. I understand that it is a good thing to pray for souls in purgatory or offer a mass for the deceased. But what does the Church teach about the souls who have no mass offered in their name or who do not have many family/friends praying for their soul while in purgatory? It sounds like those who have more “friends on earth” praying for them are better off than those who don’t and that, somehow, God rewards a soul by delivering it from purgatory sooner than a soul who is not being prayed for as regularly. Basically, what does the Church teach about the souls in purgatory who are not prayed for by many family and friends or who do not have masses offered in their name? The idea of the Lord rewarding a soul for these prayers while denying another for a lack of prayers creates a very confusing image of God for me…

Many people pray in general everyday for the souls in Purgatory. Some people pray for souls who are no longer in Purgatory, those prayers are applied to the souls that need them most. There is no wasted prayer!

I sometimes ask the souls that I’ve prayed for to pray for me in return when they are released from Purgatory.

I’ve heard that the following Scripture passage may be an allusion to this:

Non-Catholics are unfaithful and go to hell not purgatory.
This is what the Catholic church always taught on the salvation dogma (below) no one is saved outside the Catholic Church. To be saved one would have to be joined to the Church before death. Here is a quote ex-cathedra from true Popes.

*The Catholic Church teaches that Outside the Catholic Church There is No Salvation. This dogma means what it says and says what it means.

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, “Cantate Domino,” 1441, ex cathedra:
