My Dear Brothers & Sisters:
Most Catholics aren’t aware of the Practice of the Double Confiteor, and fewer know what the Church was trying to teach by having the priest confess his sins to the congregation (represented by the Acolytes) and then the congregation (represented by the Acolytes) confess their sins to the priest - Only when the priest & congregation take their proper place, and the confession is make in the vernacular ("…Through my own fault, through my own most grievous fault, in what I have done and what I have left undone…") are we reminded our sinfulness and need for the prayers and support of our brothers & sisters in Christ, and of their (including our priests) need our prayers & support as well.
With that in mind, and mindful that we are nearing the Season of Advent and preparing for both the First Coming of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ as a baby in Bethlehem & His Second Coming in Glory, I ask that we pray, as we did on the thread that just closed, for our priests:
Prayer for Priests**
O almighty and eternal God, look upon the face of Thy Christ, and for love of Him who is the eternal High Priest, have mercy on Your priests. Remember, O most compassionate God, that they are but weak and frail human beings. Stir up in them the grace of their own vocation which is in them by the imposition of the Bishop’s hands. Keep them close to You, lest the enemy prevail against them, so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their sublime calling.
O Jesus, I pray You to help your faithful and fervent priests; for Your unfaithful and lukewarm priests, for Your priests laboring at home and abroad in distant mission fields; for Your tempted priests; for Your lonely and desolate priests; for Your young priests; for Your aged priests and for Your sick priests.
But especially I commend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who have given me the precious Body and Blood of Jesus in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed me or helped and encouraged me and all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way.
O Jesus, keep them all close to Your heart and bless them abundantly both now and in eternity.
Amen.
I ask you to add your prayers as you are able, or to add the names of any priests you wish us to pray for. The last Thread was closed after 1,000 posts - that meant a lot of us felt the need to pray for our priests. That need didn’t stop because the mods closed the Thread.
My brothers & sisters, please add to this even if all you have to add is the name of a priest who driving you nuts that you’ve decided to pray for rather than complain about.
Remember, God inhabits the prayers & praises of His People.
Your Brother & Servant in Christ, Michael
