My great niece will be having open heart surgery tomorrow. She is just two months old and is really fighting for her life! She has a hole in her heart, her aorta is too large, two of her arteries are switched, the one that pumps blood to the body goes to the lungs and vise versa and she is missing a valve. The doctors had hoped that she could wait until 6 months for the surgery, but she was admitted to Children’s hospital last week. She is in heart failure and her lungs are filling up with fluid so she is on an I.V. of lasix. She is having trouble swallowing, so she has a feeding tube.
The doctors feel that the surgery will be a success. They will repair everything but can not replace the missing valve until she is in her late teens early twenties and is done growing. We are praying for strength and healing for this dear baby. For wisdom and skill for the doctors and also for strength for our family. Tomorrow and the coming weeks are going to be very difficult for all of us, but mostly for my niece, the baby’s mom, who is only 18. She has handle this with a grace well beyond her years and we are all so very proud of her!
I’d appreciate any prayers for us! Thank you!

What a hero your niece is! 🙂 She has much strength already to give life to this high needs child in an age when most would refuse. 😦 And at such a young age. What grace she has, she will be blessed for her act of heroic virtue. She is more a mother than many who call themselves such. Poor baby! What a hard way to start life. 😦 Prayers for healing and strength for mommy and baby.

I have what you described which is called corrected transpostion. Where the side of your heart that pumps to your body is pumping to the lungs and vise versa. The hole is probably helping until they can do the surgery believe it or not. They can do so much more for your great niece than they were able to do with me almost 37 years ago.

I will keep your great niece, her mama and the doctors caring for her in my prayers.

The baby has come through surgery and it went as expected. My niece and my sister will get to see her within the next hour. They will give me more info. after that. Praise God for watching over this little one. She still has a long way to go, but it’s a great start!

Please continue to pray for my niece, she is not doing well. They did a chest x-ray today and her left lung is collapsed, the left half of her diaphram was paralyzed. She will need surgery to tack it away from her lung. The pulmonary doctor did a procedure where he went into the lungs, thru the vent, with a scope and sucked our a lot of secretions and some blockages that were in the bronchial tubes. They will repeat the tests on Monday. If her diaphram is the same, they will take her to surgery.
This poor baby has been through so much…they keep trying to get her off the vent. and are trying to avoid the tracheotomy, but there is a chance of having to have it done. If she does get it, she will have it for a year maybe even two!

I see you are in PA - is your great niece as well? I know firsthand the Children’s hospital in Pittsburgh is excellent, and have heard great reviews from people who have experience with CHOP (Philadelphia). If she’s in either of these places you’ll know they’re doing all they can. Prayers for her!

She’s at Children’s in Pittsburgh. Her care has been wonderful. My sister and niece can not say enough about the doctors and nurses, as well as everyone else that works there. They are great!
But this is so very scary! Thank you for your prayers!

Very good - they are amazing. That place runs like clockwork. After my son was out of the woods I just sat back and watched them work. They were so impressive. While we were in ICU there were nurses there on their feet for hours on end. I can’t imagine working those jobs but thank the Lord some people have that calling.

Their social workers were very helpful to us as well.

The doctors were unable to do her tests today, her lung is not inflated enough for them to do it, so we wait.
Her bronchial trunk and tubes are floppy because they were so compressed for so long. They are flattened instead of round. That causes them to collapse in when she breaths.
Please continue with your prayers!

Just found this! Prayers for the baby and her family!

Oh my gosh, prayers for this poor baby and family. I pray that this baby is not suffering. And especially for the poor mother having to watch her dear child go through this. I cannot even begin to imagine if it were my child. God bless!
