Since God is all-powerful and outside of space and time, why does it not work to pray that something in the past did not happen, for example if I prayed that the 9/11 attacks never happened?

God is omnipotent but omnipotence doesn’t entail illogical activity like making 1 = 0, which is what destroying past events amounts to… He doesn’t compel us to obey His commandments because it would defeat the purpose of giving us free will. He permitted the 9/11 attacks for that very reason but He often prevents torture and murder by other means. Evil is often horrific but it isn’t allowed to dominate every aspect of life. Otherwise the vast majority of living creatures would be maimed and killed by terrorists or natural disasters. As Leibniz pointed out, there are far more houses than hospitals…

God will not change known history. However, in the case of unknown past I think it useful to pray. For example, it is not useful to pray the 9-11 didn’t happen, but it is useful to pray that the victims repented any sins and are united with God.

Similar to what was already stated, things happen. It’s rough. Sometimes it makes no sense. Sin was never intended, and when a group of people get out of hand, sometimes a conflict is necessary to bring attention to the group’s bad “manners.” What we as men need to do is to become masters of conflict: to learn how to deal with it effectively. It’s simple, but not easy.
I will pray for you in this regard. Best of luck, and I hope God holds a powerful future for you! Wishing evil didn’t happen might be honorable before God, and if indeed this is true, He will see fit to give you grace. That is a good preservation for the world.
