Praying an athiest and satanist to heaven?

I know of a woman who is a physician. She is a converted Catholic that is very devout. Her husband was also a physician but was an atheist. Her son was a teenager and claimed to be a statanist. The husband and son were recently killed in a horrible accident. While we can not possibly know what took place between the two people killed and God…can we help them by praying them to heaven? My heart refuses to believe that it is not possible and I will spend the rest of my life praying for them! The wife/mother is devastated and my prayers will continue for her as well. I have been told that my prayers won’t help the dead if they have already gone to hell. I believe in a loving God and I firmly believe that prayer changes things. Why can prayer not change this? While I realize that those of you reading this can not know so much of the circumstances surrounding this…how can we not know what prayer is capapble of?

Please include this family in your prayers!!
 
If your heart has been moved to have such mercy - and human;s are imperfect - think how much more the perfect God of Love is moved to mercy. Young people often say things / believe things they don’t fully understand. Sadly some young ppl like to call themselves “satanists” cause they think its cool.
I will pray for them also - I am sure no prayers are ever wasted

Heavenly Father, please have mercy on the souls of this woman’s husband and son, that they may have had hearts misguided in innocence, enough to merit them heaven, by your grace, and through the power of your Cross through your Holy Church. Amen. :crossrc:

If one is in Hell, prayers cannot bring one out of Hell; however, we don’t know for sure who goes to Hell. Assuming someone to go to Hell is wrong and irresponsble. During their last breath, God could reveil to them and give them graces to convert and to accept God’s mercy and forgiveness.

We don’t really know what actually happened but we hope that is the case and we keep on praying.
 
Another thing to remember is that God is outside of time and can apply your prayers as He wishes.

So it’s quite possible that your prayers now can be applied to these two unfortunate souls during their lifetime. Kinda like the way Mary and all the saints of the past are present at every Mass, as are we at Calvary, since every Mass is actually one and the same Sacrifice which transcends time.

St Padre Pio prayed for his father for many years after the father’s death. He was once asked what he prayed for and he said ‘for him to have a good and peaceful death’ :eek:

Yes, Padre Pio said, after it was pointed out that his father died 10 years earlier, that God was not bound by time.

Also, Mary once said that so many souls are in hell because they had no one to pray for them. At least these two souls have people to pray for them, in particular you !

In addition, don’t forget about the Divine Mercy:

“In this hour you can obtain everything for yourself and for others for the asking; it was the hour of grace for the whole world - mercy triumphed over justice.”

Thank you everyone for your beautiful responses!! It makes me feel better for them. I will continue to pray for all of them and I also know that no prayer goes unwasted…if not for them…for others. My hope though is that some day they will all see each other in heaven. God bless you all!

first of all even those who claim they don’t beleive in god usually secretly in their heart know that he exists…but they bury it and deny it because if they faced the truth then they would have to face up to their life and sins…
we don’t know that they are lost…god in a split second can communicate with them and grant them the graces they need…he can get them to be repentant …even if they was unconscious he can still communicate with their soul…god could have saved them…god can make anyones soul ready to appear before him in a split second if he wants to…
don’t stop praying for them…they may have been saved but they may be in purgatory…just pray to god…beg him to save them…and if they are in purgatory to release them or at least grant them relief …it has been said that time does not exist before god…so maybe when they died god knew that you would devote yourself to praying for them and their salvation so he added the prayers in advance to their souls …
many people devote themselves to praying for the dying myself included…so maybe someones prayer helped them in their last hour…pray the divine mercy chaplet for them…
ask god for a sign (the saints have done this)…ask god that if they are saved to let you receive a white rose in x days…if they are in purgatory to let you receive a red rose in x days…or ask god in a prayer before you go to sleep to give you a sign in a dream…whether they are saved…whether they need prayers…

Hello, a couple of more things, and sorry if you know most or all of this already…
  • Padre Pio, who as you will know had tremendous miraculous powers which were well known even as he was living, was once visited by a distraught woman whose husband committed suicide. He said not to worry, as her husband repented just before his death. So no one knows what happens in those very last moments. Only God…
  • Saint Faustina Kowalska was told by God one day that He was so pleased with her, that she could have anything she wanted. She asked God to take everyone that day who would have gone to hell, and bring them to heaven instead. God said something like “You have no idea what you are asking of Me…but it shows Me you understand the depths of My mercy.” And so He did.
  • I read somewhere that to deny or doubt God’s mercy is to deny or doubt His divine power. His mercy is what makes Him God !!
  • Even though God is merciful, He is also just, so we have to continue praying, especially for Holy Souls in purgatory…
  • There are many relevant prayers we can do: the Divine Mercy prayers (see the link above), the Padre Pio prayer that says “Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you” (see the first link below), and the Saint Gertrude prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory (as well as other deceased – see the second and third links below).

Actually, praying for the Holy Souls in purgatory is one of the most ‘cost-effective’ things one can do 🙂 , as the single prayer releases 1000 (it has been said) souls, who enter heaven with great gratitude to the person praying, and in turn will pray for that person and his/her intentions. Jesus Himself told Saint Gertrude "that he longs for someone to ask Him to release souls from purgatory, just as a king who imprisons a friend for justice’s sake hopes that someone will beg for mercy for his friend. Jesus ends with: ‘I accept with highest pleasure what is offered to Me for the poor souls, for I long inexpressibly to have near Me those for whom I paid so great a price. By the prayers of thy loving soul, I am induced to free a prisoner from purgatory as often as thou dost move thy tongue to utter a word of prayer.’ "

Well, ok, it says “a prisoner” here, but I have also heard it is “many” or “1000”. This is from the link below, under “About Saint Gertrude the Great”…
