So, this might be a stupid question, but are the creeds, like the Nicene Creed and the Apostles creed, are they to be prayed, or are they simple professions of faith that outline general Christian doctrine? I know they are recited in services (at least I know the Nicene one is), but do people actually use them to pray at all?

At Compline in the Orthodox Church, the Nicene Creed is chanted after the Great Doxology.

In Christ,
Andrew

But presumably they’re not used for private prayer, right?
Lay people can pray almost any of the services on their own (obviously not reciting the priest or deacon’s prayers). I don’t see any reason why one couldn’t recite the Symbol of Faith on their own.

In Christ,
Andrew

I use the Nicene Creed in private prayer all the time, usually meditating on each line as I pray.

It’s certainly not mandated that one has to pray with a creed in private, but if you find it fruitful then go ahead.

And don’t forget, the Apostles Creed is part of the rosary, a particularly popular form of private prayer.

I find the Athanasius Creed wonderful to mediatate upon. Have you ever heard of the Act of Faith that peeps usually pray in the morning. It is sort of like a creed. I find comfort in reciting the creeds in my own private prayer life.

Act of Faith

O my God, I firmly believe that you are One God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths that the holy Catholic Church teaches, because you have revealed them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived.

God bless.

I didn’t know that. I generally don’t pray the rosary, as I am not a Roman Catholic. 😃

But thanks. I was considering using them because sometimes I have great difficulty focusing and speaking when praying, so I thought they could help me in that respect.

Yes. You always start the rosary with the Apostle’s Creed. 🙂
