Praying for other people....will you receive any graces from God?

I’m studying for some of my pre-exams which are on the 03-feb this year…and i’m spending time praying for people on this website and greating new member…i’m just woundering will i receive any grace’s from heaven for doing any of this work

just being honest.

Remember, what gives our actions meaning is the love with which we do them.

If you feel that you need to study (which you probably do and it’s a responsibility!) then study and don’t feel bad about that and then when you have time pray for people and help them in what ways you can. But if you do decide to devote a bit more time for prayer, - only do this if you’re praying out of love for the people and not to receive anything in return.

You receive all the graces you would get only praying for yourself when you pray for others. So you win big time. There’s nothing wrong with wanting grace, rewards, trasure in heaven. Go for it. Get all the grace and treasure you can., Jesus told us to do this. As you grow you will likely change. This will be grace working in you. You have the right attitude now though. Go for it.

   Many saints started by seeking great treasure in heaven. Many started by wanting to be Jesus or Mary’s favourite. It’s a legitimate path to sanctity but you do need to learn and grow along the way. Like Jesus said, where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
   
   So if you get some treasure you’ll have your heart in the right place. Go after that treasure and see the Holy Spirit work in your life. You’ll be doing what our Lord said and on the way. Good luck and God bless.

I’m kind of confused, I mean shouldn’t we still pray for others even if we get nothing in return? is receiving graces the deciding factor? the Saints did seek heavenly treasures but their first treasure was following God’s will…St Bernadette prayed:

“O Divine Jesus, impress on my heart a disposition like that of a certain man who loved your cross so much that he used to say if after serving you for a hundred years his only recompense were the grace to suffer one hour for love of You, he would believe all his service too well rewarded”

I dont know maybe I’m wrong

You are right. Would that we were like St Bernard. The spiritual life is a journey along which we progress ever steadily towards perfection. At least perfection is the goal. We start like babies just learning to crawl, then as we grow older we can walk, and so on until we begin to run and then we can run faster with practise. What I say is that he has a good starting point, not that he should make this his plan of life. He is doing what Jesus said. If we try to be like St Bernard at the beginning we will very quickly fall in a heap and may just give up. Seeking treasure which is grace is going to be the first step. That grace will move one over time onto the next step and so on until God willing we reach the goal, like St Bernard. I hope this explains what I mean.

When we pray for others, we NEVER get “nothing” in return. God love you! One of the plethora of Treasures of the Church—when you do something for another-you also receive the same. This is why it is good to do just that.

Two for the price of one. Well, kind-of. Like double coupons.

It doesn’t diminish the “worth” of the act (prayer, act, work…) but through charity, you also receive the Grace/Blessing.

I (attempt to) gain a Plenary Indulgence for a soul or souls in Purgatory every time I go to Mass and receive Holy Communion. That way, it will be applied to a Holy Soul ~and~ myself. 2 for 1. I could also just receive it for myself. This way, from what I have learned, the souls I help to release from Purgatory will be on the other side of the veil when I die, and will go with me and help me at my judgment.

<-I pray this is so. What a comforting thought.

At the very least, when that soul comes into its Glory in Heaven, they will pray for me for my act of Charity.

I need all the prayers I can get.

Souls in Heaven are “favored sons and daughters” of God. They have made it back to Him.

Maybe it helps some people to remember this, as an encouragement.

I guess my response came from the fact that it doesn’t help me personally, probably cause i’m a naturally very selfish person. So it just presents a temptation. (thats’ why what St Bernadette said really spoke to me)

and John Russell, I do see what you mean. It’s wonderful when people value graces. Most of the world does not and of course I’m very thankful for all the graces God has given me. I don’t know why He did to be honest lol. Maybe it was because of my efforts and prayers, but really my efforts are so pitiful that more probably it was because of the prayers of the Blessed Virgin.

There is a story about St. Thomas Aquinas. Our Lord appeared to St. Thomas… and said “You have written well of Me. What reward would you like?”. St. Thomas replied… “Nothing, Lord. I have done this, because I love You.” I’m sure his reply was very pleasing to Our Lord.

Monica… you have described the role of the humble servant. And this is what all of us should strive for. But I have often heard it said… that Our Loving God… will never be “outdone” in acts of Charity and Mercy.

So… you are right… in assuming an attitude of “wanting nothing”… in return for your prayers. But ain’t it GREAT to know… that Our Lord will shower us with His Love… for showing Charity to others! :extrahappy: Like John said… it’s a WIN-WIN!
