@mrsdizzyd Do you know if this follows the official 4 volume LOTH? (It appears to, but I’ve never used this site before.) If so, these podcasts are an AMAZING resource! They even include an easy-to-follow transcript of each hour! I would have loved to have had this when I first got started!

@poche You’re right! And the Invitatory is a part of either the Order of Readings or Morning Prayer (depending on which one is the first office you say for the day).

Per The General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours:
  1. The invitatory is placed at the beginning of the whole sequence of the day’s
prayer, that is, it precedes either morning prayer or the office of readings,
whichever of these liturgical rites begins the day.

Honestly, I’m not totally sure, but I do think they are following the official LOTH as it appears on the USCCB site and in the four volume set.

I only have the single volume Christian Prayer book.

I’m waiting for the revisions before I purchase the 4 volume set.

I was going to note as you mentioned a bit here, that it’s different for different countries.
I don’t use an app but a book. It says in the front which countries it covers, I am in UK for instance and it does not cover US (it does include Australia and New Zealand). Just to note if anyone is going to buy the books it might be wise to check it’s for your country.
Also if you thinking about moving to using a book, if you just want to do morning, day(any or all 3), evening and night prayer, you can get one book for all these and don’t need to buy the whole set. You only need the whole set if you wish to include Office of readings. So if you want to cut costs you can get one book for everything and then do Office of readings online. Hope that doesnt make it complex. Personally I really enjoy the book in preference to online, but it is a personal thing. This may be only for UK, you’d have to check if you are elsewhere.

For the US version, if you plan on praying day prayer and night prayer using the single volume it gets pretty redundant. It only includes one week of night prayers and only one distinct hour of day prayer. If you want to do the other day hours you repeat the same handful of alternate readings.

Just an FYI for anyone thinking about it. Also, in the US there is going to be a LOTH revision coming out fairly soon. If you want the full set and you will want the revisions, you should wait.

I’m pretty sure there is only one week of Night Prayer. From the opening hymn to the final prayer, the contents remain the same, regardless of season of the Church year or solemnities or feast days. If memory serves (which is a very big if), the only day on which Compline (Night Prayer) changes in Holy Saturday.

The Marian antiphon that is sung at the end is the only indication of what Church season one is in, because the choice of hymn follows the Church year.

But the only way I’ve ever prayed Compline is in the monastery (and religious Orders have their own approved prayers) and currently in a book that only has Night Prayer in it. So I could be completely wrong about this.

In any event, I’m too lazy to get up and actually check a book. 😂

Thanks good to know

In the UK version night prayer is also one week, as far as I am aware it’s always that way. Great saints etc, have been known to learn it all off by heart and have no need of the book, ie the entire week…pretty impressive I think.
