Ok, this is kind of a hard question to word, and i am just curious about this. I work the night shift at my job (2100-0500) and am wondering how I should pray the LOTH. Should i do morning prayer when I wake up around 2PM or should i say it after I get home from work and before bed at 6AM? And the continue accordingingly with evening prayer and such. I hope this makes a little sense.

I’ve done night-shift in a pilgrim hospital in Lourdes, and the Office is a comfort and a time-keeper. Also for all-night Adoration. I sometimes postpone Evening Prayer till quite late, and Night Prayer for after the first quiet round. The Office of Readings can be said any time, even the night before. So no worries there. (At home, if I become wakeful at 3am, I’ll read it and go back to sleep.) Then Morning Prayer; I sometimes postpone it till mid-morning, but it is better kept in the pre-dawn hours, so it fits with a night-shift. Perhaps you could squeeze in Mid-Morning Prayer before you clock-off.

Would this leave you enough time to work your shift?

Well, the only issue I have here is I cannot bring it in to work as I work in a prison. They do not allow us to bring in any reading material. So thats what makes it a little more difficult.

Are you allowed a cell phone or computer access? The Divine Office is available online and there are some phone apps as well.

Late to the conversation. But I favor Compline before I go on shift, Office of Readings on break, Morning Prayer after I clock out.

If I don’t have access to a book, app or website, I just pray the rosary spread throughout the night, uniting my prayers with those who are able to pray the office properly.

I am not allowed a cell phone but I may be able to online. We are somewhat limited with our internet access but I might be able to access that. Than you for the great suggstion. I hadn’t thought of that. I also enjoy praying the rosary during my shift as I have alot of downtime between duties. Thank you guys so much for your help! I will keep you all in my prayers!

I need to learn how to do the office of readings. I have never been taught how and have had no success finding direction on the internet. Do you know of anywhere I could find direction for that?

If you’re on iPhone or Android, the Laudate app lays it all out there. You can also go to Universalis.com.

The books themselves are out of my price range, so I can’t give any advice there.

It’s fairly simple, it’s just another Office with its own distinct structure. What book are you using for the Liturgy of the Hours? The 4-volume or the single volume Christian Prayer? If you have the single-volume, you will only have a brief selection of readings but not the whole thing.

I prefer: www.ibreviary.org/en/
and (IMHO) their app is very well done too.

It is admirable to try and keep to the hours as prescribed; however, as laity, we’re not strictly bound to those hours. The Pastor and Deacon of my Church that helped me to get started told me that when I couldn’t make the hours because of work and kids and life, to just start at the beginning (or where I left off) and work my way thru the prayers as I had time to do them - not to be scrupulous about the timing.

Personally, I do like to try and pry compline (night prayer) just before I retire for the day

The above site will help and there is a tutorial on the site about how to pray as well.
Try to find a Deacon to help you thru Advent, Lent, and Easter… these can be four-six-ribbon days 😃

You might check out Pray Station Portable online. It’s a podcast of the Divine Office, and you can hear the Office of Readings on there. Their website also lists the proper daily page numbers for each edition of the Liturgy of the Hours. I found it incredibly helpful when I was learning to pray it. You probably wouldn’t be able to use it at work, but you could check it out in your spare time.

👍

Thank You Phil, I hand intended to put this link in my prior post!
I have a house full of un-planned house guests for the past two weeks and it’s throwing my game off 🙂
My mother always said that house guests are like fish.

Both need to be thrown out after three days.
