Praying to a loved one

If a loved one has passed away, can he hear you if you pray to him? For example, if you tell him you love him, you’re sorry for something, or you are praying that he is at peace and you want him to know that he is at peace?

You can ask your loved one to pray for you if their dead, because they might either be in Purgatory or Heaven, and whether they’re in either one, they can intercede for you.
 
Once they make it to heaven, they can definitely hear you. See section 8 of this helpful document from Catholic Education and Resource Center (I got a hardcopy of it from a church).


If you are not sure if your loved one is in heaven, then you can still pray and ask God to please pass along the message to your loved one if it be His will. It seems like a loving God would likely honor such a request.
