Praying to Mary and Saints

As I examine my faith I find it difficult to accept praying to Mary and Saints. Isn’t it a sin to pray to anyone except the Trinity? I vaguely recall of an incident in the O.T. where someone prayed to someone deceased but, I can’t find it. Is this in the O.T.?
