You know, it’s been for such a long time that I’ve associated that passage with Mary that I didn’t stop to think about finding the sourceExactly.
1 Kings 2:20 She said, ‘I have one small request to make you; do not refuse me.’ ‘Mother,’ the king replied, ‘make your request, for I shall not refuse you.’
If Solomon can say this to his mother, why can’t Jesus?
The Wedding at Cana reference was true, Jesus did not refuse His mother, despite the fact that His time had not yet come, and He did share His mother with us at the crucifixion.
The people that you’re talking with, though, may not accept the Old Testament references as not everybody understands the connection between the two, so, if you’re looking for New Testament references… we know that the prayers of the Saints are specifically mentioned in the book of Revelation, and we also believe that Mary is the ‘woman clothed with the sun’, and if you read the Gospel of Luke, it clearly states that Mary is Blessed, and you can see that at the Crucifixion, Jesus said, ‘today you will be with me in Paradise’ to the thief… which shows that Heaven is accessible.
In Timothy 2: 1-5 it tells us that Jesus is the one mediator between God and humanity, but it also says intercessions should be offered for everyone.
Beyond this, I’m a little out of my depth… except to say that Jesus told us that He would build His Church on Peter, that the gates of Hell would not prevail against it, and that He would not leave us orphans.
