I understand the idea of asking the saints in heaven for their intercession on our behalf, but… how do you go about doing that, exactly? What specifically do you ask for?

I talk to the saints as if they are firends and ask them to pray for me, or to join me in praying for a cause, as I would any friend on earth. Those I ask depend on who has inspired me, or who I have read has experience with the help I need. Feeling pretty desperate these days, St. Joseph (teresa of Avila’s go to guy), St. Jude (hopeles causes), and St. Anthony are big favorites. Also Mary Magdalene and Catherine of Siena, who epitomize great leaders to me and always Mary, mother of Jesus.

Saints also have special causes, either because of missions they worked with during their lives, or because of what their earthly supporters lobbied the Church to have affiliated with their names. There is an interesting article available on www.americancatholic.org in St. Anthony’s Messenger about this in November or Decmebr’s issue: how saints are assigend their patron causes. It kind of disappointed me. I thought the cuases would always be things that the saints were known to help while still alive.

At any rate, you can ask any one to pray for you for anything, if you so wish. but if you are interested in looking up certain saints to appeal to them directly for causes, in this modern age you can google “patron saint of prisoners” for example, and it will give you sights that name saints affiliated with prayers for prisoners such as Maximilan Kolbe (who is also patron saint of chemical addicts)…or any cause.

Hard to add to anything that was already said:thumbsup:

Just would reemphasize that you just talk to them as you would a friend trusting in God’s Eternal Grace that they hear you.

God Bless,
Maria

O.K., you are asking for formuae by which we ask for the intercession of a Saint.
  1. We do not pray to a Saint, we Pray to God and God only. It is only God that can actually answer a prayer.
  2. How do we do it? Simple. I will give you a prayer I have said to St Ignatius de Loyola for years at Track Meets. I am praying for the sprint relay team to make good handoffs of the Baton - and not drop it.
3 It goes like this. (In Nomene Patris, et fili, et Spiritus Sancti)

" In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Oh Saint Ignatius thank you for all of your help in the past. I am here again to ask you , if your not busy. May I ask for you to ask Jesus Christ to help the boys about to race. Please ask Jesus to make the baton secure in their hands. I know you are close to the Father right now. I thank you again…In the name of the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit". I 'll see you later.
4. Then I gives thanks after the race. In about 70 track meets they dropped it once.

Yes, talk to Saints as you would a friend. I’ve also begun to say St.____ please ask Jesus to help me.

Another thing I’ve begun doing which helps me to put everything into perspective, is that I picture all the saints which I am asking to help me kneeling at the foot of Our Lord. Therefore, I do not forget that the answers and miracles come from Jesus.

I’ve unintentionallly begun to associate some saints with particular relatives; it’s almost like I’m asking them to be patrons over people who need them but might not recognize it.

Just remember that all intercessory prayer is not to the saint but for the saint to pray for you and not you to them. Intercessaroy prayer should lead to God. It helps to get acquainted with the lives of the saints. Before school every morning, we pray and add a little blurp about the saint of the day and ask them to pray for us in addition to Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint Philomena, Saint Louis de Montfort, Saint Gerardand Saint Thomas AquinasAnd as God is my witness, praying to Saint Anthony to help me find lost items has NEVER failed me. Honest injun!

Remeber that the people in Purgatory are also saints. Ask these saints to pray for you. It will help the both of you.
