Praying to the Saints

Do we pray to the saints or only to God? I understand that it is God we need to help us, and only He can do that, but I have been told by a deacon that we only pray to God. I think he is misunderstanding what I mean by praying. I mean that we are asking the saints to intercede for us to the Trinity, but he says no we cannot do that theologically.
