"Praying well"

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In prayer, many times, we simply ask God for our intentions or the intentions of others. However, I wonder how many of us pray beyond “petitons” in vocal or mental prayer.

I would like to offer this morning a link to an article which was a blessing for me to read and I want to share it this morning because prayer is so very important for all of us. Prayer is a covenant relationship with God – it is far more than words we recite. I hope you will read the article and take it seriously. Prayer needs to be the most important relationship in our lives – it needs more time than most of us give to it, it seems to me. I know I want to begin to spend my time more carefully and learn from the Lord through Mary, to pray well.

Thank you, MariaChristi. I have a question and a point of information about the website. First, just before the references are listed at the bottom of the first page is this sentence: “Learn more about the art and the science of prayer!*”. What is your understanding of the “science of prayer”?

Secondly, I cannot go beyond the second page *Orientation and Introduction to a Brief Meditation on the Our Father according to the Seven Stations of the Interior Liturgy.

When I hit the link Move to 1st Station of Interior Pilgrimage I get a message that a “malicious site” is being blocked. I don’t recall ever having that happen with my iPad before. Anyway I can’t go any further, but I will try again later.

First, in answer to your question about the “science of prayer”, I understand it to mean learning a “way of prayer” that is fruitful, i.e. yields good results. Just as there is a “science of cooking” i.e. a way of putting certain ingredients together, or a procedure, or a method used to make a good product. Does that help a bit?

Second, I went to the website and the link worked fine on my computer. We use Webroot for security and it has kept us safe from anything “malicious” so I’m not sure what the problem may have been for your iPad. So sorry to hear of your difficulty with the link.

I so much appreciate your explanation of the “science of prayer.” I don’t find it very satisfying to focus my thoughts as I pray - so I don’t. It’s more like a visit. However, “fruitful” and even “productive” are adjectives that I would use to describe the time that I spend in prayer. I think that my family (especially my grandparents and aunts) and my first grade teacher Sister Bernard must have done a really good job nourishing my faith - for which I am eternally grateful.

Thanks to the Lord, for His kindness in getting the problem solved and enabling you to go further on “the website pilgrimage” !

Thanks also to your family and the dear nun who gave you a good start on your journey of prayer. I too am very grateful to my family and the many good religious, priests and lay persons God brought into my life to help me on my journey.

How Good God is! Today, July 13, on the anniversary of Mary’s third apparition at Fatima, I thank Him again for His great gift of our Mother Mary to us from His Cross and each time He has sent her to earth to help us. This 100th Anniversary Year of her Apparitions to the three little children at Fatima can be a time of special blessings for us.

May we turn and become like little children and hear again her words at Cana, recorded in John’s Gospel: “Do whatever He tells you.”
