Does anyone say the Rosary or any other particular prayers while driving? If so, how do you manage to do both well?

I had to give up on that (other than “free form” praying) in order to drive safely. Instead, I listen to Catholic radio (Relevant Radio in Chicago)…

I glad you put driving safely first. 👍

Rosary or prayer tapes/CD can be used. The key is your attention is primarily on the road and secondary on the prayers and fully on the road when needed.

Listening to Catholic radio is good as well.

I pray the rosary on lengthy open highway travel, but once I hit the metro/urban areas, especially if at rush hour, I don’t…

I try to say a prayer for safe travel before I pull out of my driveway or parking space, after that I focus my attention to the task at hand, driving and leave the prayers at that point to my guardian angel. Of course it is always good to make a short thanksgiving upon arrival for getting there in one piece. With the way traffic is these days we would be crazy to not ask for Gods help, and of course as I travel when I see any emergency vehicles going with lights and sirens I always ask God to protect them in their time of need.

I often pray the Rosary when I am driving. I use a Rosary ring and say it slowly. I allow myself as much time as I want to meditate on the Mysteries and I find it very peaceful. If traffic gets congested or hectic, I just pause and give my driving extra attention. I don’t find praying any more distracting than Catholic radio–which I also turn off if the driving gets too hectic.

I’ve tried praying the Rosary while driving but I decided that cursing in the middle of a decade defeats the whole purpose. So I do a mini Rosary and I do it quite often. One Lords Prayer, three Hail Mary’s, One Glory Be, and one O My Jesus.

Yes… driving is one of the few times i have truly alone, and a great time to meditate… used to do the rosary all the time going from home to work and vice versa… good question… 👍

I, too, like to pray the rosary while driving. Other than it being time truly spent in solitude, I find it eliminates any urge to be an agressive driver. It’s been wonderful for me. 🙂

I tried a few times, but I found it difficult to meditate on the mysteries, and watch for other cars. I have a 1/2 hr commute on an interstate, through a rural area, so traffic is not a factor, but there are still 18 wheelers to watch out for. For me, it’s not safe, and I’m a pretty good multitasker…

probably like talking on a cell phone… can do it though probably not the safest thing to do… the road anymore demands total concentration… agreed… 👍

:rotfl: Sorry, but I can really relate to that. When I read your post, I remembered the times I had the same problem.

I have a 35 minute commute that I used to try to make in 25 minutes (one reason I was able to relate to Bonvivant’s comment about using foul language in the middle of a Rosary). Lately, I’ve been using a Rosary CD and have noticed a great difference. It now takes me 35 minutes to get to work in the morning. I have started driving more slowly, so I can 1) take time to meditate and 2) finish the Rosary before I get to work. I don’t have trouble with traffic since I take roads with little traffic and leave before there is much traffic on the road.

So I get to school before they open the gates. No problem, I just spend the time with a Chaplet of Divine Mercy. (I also get the choicest parking space.)

On the way home, I use a Divine Mercy CD. I usually finish about half way home (when I stop at the post office). Then I change CDs and listen to Catholic music the rest of the way home.

I figured I couldn’t pray the Rosary with all my heart while driving. Even unintentionally, driving would take more resources in my brain than praying. Not to do the Lord and Our Lady such vain disfavor, I tried saying the Prayer of the Heart while driving and stopping at a church for 10min on my way to work to pray the Our Father and a decade in front of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

But even that didn’t seem to be the proper ambience to receive our Lord’s Mercy. So I say the Prayer of the Heart once, but meditatively, when finishing my morning prayers in the church.

The Lord deserves that I allocate some time that’s only His…
