Praying With a Hat On?

I know men aren’t supposed to wear hats to church, but can a man wear a hat and pray?

When I leave the house, I always put on a felt or straw hat (depending on the season.) The only time I don’t put on a hat is when I go to church. The question is not about wearing hats in church, but rather, praying with a hat on.

Is it disrespectful for men to pray with their hat on? Should one take their hat off when praying, and put it back on afterwards?

People of all cultures wear headcovering. Are you asserting that God does not hear their prayers or they are incapable of offering fervent prayers with their heads covered?

Ah, the poor sisters…their habits are diverting their prayers…

Reminds me of some years ago here in Ireland seeing an old man walking past a church and raising his hat as a sign of respect to the Sacrament. Not seen that but once

Everyone here and in every state I’ve lived in crossed themselves when passing a Catholic church out of respect to Christ in the Tabernacle.
But vis a vis “hats” I guess so.

Taking your hat off is an outward sign of respect as is covering the head for a woman.I like the observance. Trying to remember if I have ever seen a man wearing a hat in Church… Will watch next time I am in the Cathedral when the visitors come in. Reminds me too of one of the Cathedral clergy of the red head covering rank who removes it before the consecration and remains bare headed until after communion.

Maybe it makes more sense for you phrased another way.

way 1: Is it OK to wear a hat while praying?

way 2: Is it OK to pray, while wearing a hat?

Since the second one could have the effect of prohibiting prayer in situations where you may not have a choice (like in an emergency situation on a construction job while wearing a hard hat for a large example), it just doesn’t seem right; so therefore the first one must be ok. Maybe that logic won’t hold up in court, but it makes sense to me.

Not only is it ok, but Jews, our Old Testament / Torah brethren believe that wearing a hat is a sign of respect for God. If you have ever been to a Jewish wedding, inside a Jewish Temple, or at the Temple wall in Jerusalem, you were wearing a Yamaka.

I’ve seen that since as far back as I can remember. It’s still done today, I’ve always done it. That’s how we were taught by the Nuns.

Yes, this is true. You are supposed to cover your head.
