I’m afraid I can’t find it right now but I saw a blog taking on an article which questioned the validity of some Saints, saying it was by implication an attack on infallibility since the Pope declares Blesseds to be Saints.

So, when did the Pope declare Saints before the Congregation took over? And when Saints were “acclaimed” was that like part of the “ordinary magisterium”?

In the early Church there really wasn’t any process of canonization. The people, usually the locals of the area the saint was from, noted his or her saintly values and saintly life and death, and proclaimed for themselves that he or she was a saint.
