I’m a 20 year old female that attends college.
I lost my virginity at the age of 18, and the night I lost it, I did not plan or intend on having sex. It just happened.
I know that some people say that pre-marital sex is wrong and a sin, but living in this generation and at my age, it’s different to society if you are still a virgin.
So if so many people engage in pre-marital sex, how can it still be viewed as a sin?

For the same reason stealing is sinful even if everyone steals…

So? Even if it’s not a sin, who cares what society thinks. If you wanna wait because you’re Catholic, then wait. If sex is a “personal decision” for them, the abstinence is a “personal decision” for you.

This generation tells you to be itself, and then judges you for it.
For the same reason stealing is sinful even if everyone steals…
To elaborate on this point. Whether something is right or wrong is not dependent on “everyone’s doing it.”

Engaging in premarital sex is not a historically new thing. Its not like for 2000 years we lived in a Puritanical society and consistantly saved sex for marriage until the sexual revolution in the 60’s. While the generations of the 40’s and 50’s were pretty conservative, the 20’s were not. And before that time, it could be said to be worse. Prostitution has been fairly common historically as well.

The key to understanding Catholic sexual morality is to understand God’s design for marriage.

BTW, there are virgins around. I was 29 when I married. My husband and I were both virgins. My sister was nearly 22 when she married and still a virgin as well.

Its a challenge to wait because sexual tension can build to porportions where it barely seems possible to resist without sinning. Sex certainly isn’t like driving a car. It’s a complex series of biological processes. Self mastery over our sexual urge deals involves not just the will to stand back, but also the self knowledge to learn how to direct your actions so that you’re not like some person on skates with an open umbrella that finds themselves suddenly pullled around by a seemingly random gust of wind. You have to read the direction of the wind, know how to operate the umbrella and know how to skate to be in control of yourself. Its a life long development.

Wait, so if everybody’s doing it, then it’s not wrong?

Tell me you can see the flaw in your logic there. 🙂

It’s like the reasoning to buy something. Others are buying it so you have buy it. No, you could not be sheep. Obviously stuff like this does happen but I think it just means more when both you and your partner are virgins, because it means nobody else has gotten intimate with either of you. I would feel a little weird if I knew a number a number of guys had gotten intimate with my wife [if I had one] before me. It’s difficult, but it makes sense to me.

To which society? Sounds to me like you might want to consider finding a better crowd to run with! Most of the society I’ve encountered doesn’t feel the need to know other people’s sexual past at all.

You mention that some people say that pre-marital sex is wrong and that many people are engaged in it. It’s easy to justify sinful behavior because society does it. The bible tells us that pre-marital sex(fornication) is a sin. Paul says “Be not deceived, neither fornicators…shall inherit the Kingdom of God”. We can repent and ask for God’s forgiveness. Times have changed since the Bible was written, but sin is still sin.

The church doesn’t change what sins are according to popular vote.
According to your line of reasoning:
  1. It’s not wrong to speed and you shouldn’t get a ticket because so many other people on the road are speeding.
  2. It’s ok to shoplift, especially if you’re in a flash mob, because everyone else is shoplifting.
  3. It’s ok to use drugs, especially meth, because there are so many other people doing it.
You get the picture. People may feel more pressure now to have pre-marital sex, but it’s still a sin.

Are you going to live for the world or live for God? It doesn’t matter what is popular or unpopular with society, sin is sin. God makes that decision, not society. I think that’s a big part of the problem – society seems to have this “anything goes” attitude and it’s warping people’s minds. Pre-marital sex is and always will be a sin in God’s eyes.
