Let us all contemplate this quote which is commonly attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi. It means that we should live the Gospel and not just preach it. I need to practice this a lot more myself.
I think it is a wonderful quote, even though it might be difficult to attribute it to St. Francis. Just don’t let it become an excuse for you not to actually use words.
Although the verse actually refers to prophets in the early Church, Matthew 7:16 is particularly important for us to observe: “…By their fruits you shall know them.”
The words attributed to St. Francis echo this assessment of our “character” as Christians.
It’s a great quote, but it sometimes gets used incorrectly. It’s a reminder that we better “practice what we preach”. Sometimes folks use this quote as excuse to never share anything verbally about our faith. We reallly have to do both!
